By way of an update, followed everyone's advice, appreciated as ever.
Bench synced carbs, adj timing chain and reset the points etc.
Started her up and she fired first time. Ran her today and the knocking I had which was reduced when I replaced the clutch has now all but gone. It literally sounds like a sowing machine. It must have been the carbs slightly out of balance (no4). Quite amazed how smooth the engine is now.

CB750 / Drivetrain cover
« on: May 11, 2019, 09:24:23 AM »
I have noticed a crack on the top of the drivetrain cover and it's creeping so I don't want to re install it at present. Can this be repaired ( brazed/ welded) and polished out or am I looking for a replacement ?
Can anyone offer a solution ?
For avoidance of doubt it's the rear left hand cover secured with 2 screws on a k6

Paul

Agreed, stuck a powerful suction Hoover to the exhaust stub with inlet valve closed and exhaust open, left this running for a few minutes and didn't get anything out apart from a few black bits ( very small). So hopefully all clear. If it fires up I'll fire up on 1/3/4 and leave plug out of 2 for a few revolutions. Fingers crossed !!

Yep concensus seems to be 1/16 th drill bit. Have just ' bench synced' the slides and chokes as no 4 was slightly out of kilter.
I like to post on both sites as it's interesting getting feedback from owners, whatever the background. I think the secret is to consider fully the responses and act accordingly. Having never 'tinkered ' or 'fettled ' a bike since the 70's it's an interesting learning curve for a 'diy' mechanic. So far though I haven't broken anything and the bike is showing gradual improvement.

By the way graham, took the engine to Des and he managed to retap the threads without a time sert so fingers crossed for a rebuild ( partially there) and assuming I manage to get it back together the same way it came apart it hopefully will fire up. If not I suspect I may have to post again with list of Q's !!!!!

Hi guys.
Just inspecting the carbs before reinstalation. I have no 4 cylinder which is rich. I have looked at the slides and note that no 4 is slightly higher than the others, I assume therefore this is possibly why it's a tad rich ?. I will use the torch method to set, Q: is the adj made by the adj on the top of the carb.

Second point , my choke slides do not appear to move in sync. Nor do the slides on 2/3/4 retract fully ???? When the choke is open. Is this critical ( should all slides move in sync and open / close together for perfect operation ??)
Is there a paper / video available to watch ?

CB750 / Re: Oil tank removal / cleaning

Hi guys, I've answered my own question after doing a strip down of the bike. The rear fastening to the rear of the oil tank and hidden beneath the battery box can be reached quite easily on removing the rear wheel and plastic mudguard. Just thought I'd post that thought for anyone having a similar dilemma.

"Might be worth adding a post on the USA site also, they were equally helpful on advice.

CB750 / Oil tank removal / cleaning

Hi guys
Have just changed the oil and filter on the k6 and just before I filled the oil tank I thought I'd have a look inside. There is around 6 mm of thick sludge in the bottom. None of this came out with the old oil so would have gone unnoticed had I not peeked in the actual tank. I proceeded to try and remove the tank until I noted a further feed / braided pipe at the rear which I could not get to ( obviously a feed and return pipe set up) So I re installed the tank and went ahead and filled it, with a view to doing another day.
I went on line and the only reference I could find with regard to its removal was to 'take the engine out' which appears a little drastic.
Has anyone removed it without too much of a strip down for a clean. Has anyone had any issues with the sludge - guess what I am asking is should I ensure its clean before I run it again. I'm sure this sludge has been in the tank for a while and it does not seem to have caused any issues to date , but thought I should get a second opinion on the matter ?

Thanks trigger, on the face of it looks very similar but will brave the cold in the garage and compare later.
On the springs I want to fit the shorter new springs - can you see advise if you for see a problem with that at all ( from memory they measured 32.7 mm as opposed to 35mm for the removed Spring)
Clutch plates ( new ck1145) have been in soak overnight ready for install.
Many thanks
Paul

Duly noted trigger, ck1145 required.

Plot thickens as regards the basket query ???. Would it be too much trouble to throw a few pointers to see if I can clarify if it's a k6 basket ?.
It's the first basket I've ever touched - let alone identifying it's type ?.
Is there a specific thing I can check or would you need photos etc ?
Many thanks
Paul

By way of an update: d avid silver spares unfortunately cannot assist on the clutch issue. They appear to supply a clutch set which comprises of all slanted oil grooves with current part numbers appertaining to the k6 bike. They state Honda made the changes to all slanted friction discs away from the 6+1 set ( 6 straight grooves + 1 slanted grove disc ) and that they supply this for the 'k' series bikes and have had no negative feedback to date.
It's tempting to try the discs before I invest in a ck1145 kit but I have yet to make that decision.
What I have checked is that the friction discs are all well within their service limit ( in fact they are hardly worn at all from the standard values. - leading me to suspect the clutch may have already been replaced. It was biting at around 3/4 which led me to think the clutch was at the end of its life ?.
What I have noticed is that the old springs are way over length. The replacement ( new) springs I have are of the standard length but the old ones are approx 3-5 mm longer - again this leads me to suspect the clutch has been out at some point.
I am tempted to replace the springs with the correct ones and clean all the discs and reuse them for a while longer.
Is this sound logic if the discs are all in spec ?
Also what method would be advised to clean the metal plates before rebuilding the clutch ?, is it a case of brake cleaner and a very light touch with wet and dry ??????
Sorry to rake this up again but it has brought out quite a bit of debate.
The outer friction disc on my clutch was fitted with the outer edge of the grooves trailing the inner, I will flip this as per triggers advice and have the inner edge of the groove trailing the outer as per the attached to see what effect this has ?

Paul

I might first go down the route that they have sold the wrong one in the first place and ask for an exchange - worth a try
