Misc / Open / Number plates
« on: April 02, 2018, 06:00:07 PM »
I know many folk don’t like classic black/alloy plates on stuff that was never allowed to have them originally but does anyone know for sure if the designation of historic class automatically allows use of the earlier plates?

The DVLA site only says that vehicles 40 years old in 2015 are allowed and therefore APPEARS not to have been updated (no surprise there)

Humour / Them Wigan folk
« on: February 22, 2018, 08:32:41 AM »
We used to live in Southport and I was in a Wigan pub one day and overheard one Wiganer telling his mate that a new pub had opened nearby and you could get a pie, a pint and a woman for a quid!
His mate replied ‘I’ll bet the pies aren’t up to much’

Misc / Open / External Torx bolts
« on: January 18, 2018, 08:38:03 AM »
Hi folks,
Not bike related but I’m restoring a 1993 MGR V8 and need some (120 Off) external Torx bolts (M6 x 25 long) in Stainless.  Hours of web trawling has not produced anything.  Do any of the members know of a supplier?  There is a site called Fastener Data, which has a supposed list of suppliers but I’ve contacted all of them without success.
This is what they look like:

CB350/400 / Carb balancing kit
« on: January 11, 2018, 03:37:15 PM »
Hi folks,
I’ve always used a single gauge with a changeover valve to set my carbs which takes away the possibility of gauge error but is obviously a PITA on four and six pot bikes.  Anyway, as I’ll be applying for 3 year driving licences next year I decided to take the plunge and buy a 4 gauge kit off t’internet.  I contacted the seller to see if they had any M5x0.8 adaptors for our bikes as the kit was only listing M6 stuff - they didn’t.  As I are a ingineer I decided to buy one anyway as I could easily make the necessary changes.

The kit arrived safely and I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were in fact the correct long and short adaptors to fit the 400/4. I have pointed this out to the company (http://www.autotoolsdirect.com) and said they might be losing sales from folks like us who think they won’t fit.  They will change their listing (assuming they have the wherewithal to measure what’s contained in the kit)

Hope this might help other forum users -  I posted in this section as I don’t know what thread size the other fours use but everything I have uses M5x0.8, including the Wings.

CB350/400 / Genuine 377 exhaust system
« on: December 23, 2017, 01:17:46 PM »
Hi folks,
Way back in 2002 I bought a full brand new 377 system from Mr Silver (when they were cheap!)
It came in a partially assembled state with the silencer clamped loosely to the header unit but the two loose pipes and seals/clamps were wrapped separately.  Now I’ve cleared some space, I intend to assemble the other 400/4 and use this exhaust system.  I thought I would separate the silencer from the headers and when I slackened the clamp bolt it moved a few turns then started to bind up.  On much closer inspection it appears that the bolt goes through the nut and then into a threaded collar acting as a locknut.

This has then been peened over to prevent removal.
It’s not a problem as I’ve now sliced the peened over end off and removed the bits so it’s easier to man handle.

After all that, my simple question is: was that normal practice on complete systems back in the day?

CB350/400 / 400/4 Seat (DS)
« on: December 11, 2017, 08:37:36 PM »
Anyone bought one of these metal based copy seats from DS?  If so, are you happy with the quality and where did you source the rear decal/stencil from?  They seem good value but seem out of shape at the back or perhaps it’s just the DS pic.

CB350/400 / .....and it comes out here!
« on: September 03, 2017, 06:10:58 PM »
Apologies to those who don't know the lyrics to 'The music goes round and round' but does anyone have a simpletons guide to blowing through all orifices on 350/4 and 400/4 carbs to ensure that there are no blockages anywhere?  Randakk in the U.S. has a guide for GL1000 of the type that says' cover hole A and inject air into hole B and it should come out of hole C. (hence the daft title)
I have cleaned them ultrasonically myself but this set have always been a bit of a bugger on any bike I've tried them on.  I have four kits to fit from Cruzinimage and home made float bowl level adapters so that I can check levels on the bench.  I was thinking of using Redex to dye the fuel in the tubes up the sides of the chambers - does anyone know if that harms these new type seals in any way?
Glad to have your thoughts as always,
Surely these bikes used to start 'on the button' and tick over evenly when new - so why do I have to coax the damn things into life on progressively more cylinders - perhaps it's this bioshite fuel these days?

Misc / Open / Socks - aaaaargh!
« on: April 12, 2017, 10:54:29 AM »
I've spoken to lots of folk - with and without bikes about this topic - is there anywhere that proper socks can be bought?  Not just for biking but for everyday use - in recent times they seem to be made from some kind of re-constituted s hite instead of spun yarn.  The consequence of this, apart from always thinking you have something foreign trapped inside the sock, is the perpetual bollockings for leaving lumps of fluff all over the carpets!
In the 'olden days' you had to check if a sock was inside out (in Orkney they say outside in) but now it's glaringly obvious from the matted fluff inside.

Help!!!

Misc / Open / Loctite nutlock problem
« on: February 03, 2017, 07:54:59 PM »
Hi folks,
Just wanted to share some info in case anyone was ever thinking of making the same mistake as me - doh!
Recently bought a very low mileage Honda CBF600SA - great bike but has a totally useless front mudguard.  Decided to fit a fender extender as I have done on other bikes in an effort to keep some of the crud off the pipes and cases. The tiny screws supplied were poorly plated self tappers so I fitted some nice 4mm stainless screws and nuts.  I gently nipped them up after applying a dab of Loctite Nutlock as I have done on many occasions.  All well for a few days then disaster struck when I entered the garage to find bits of mudguard on the floor behind the front wheel.  Looks like the Loctite has crept under the nut and 'exploded' bits of the ABS mudguard with some kind of chemical reaction.  The cracks radiating from some of the screws extend 4 inches up the guard.
Over £100 later (lighter?), I have fitted a new guard and the fender extender but this time with Nyloc nuts.

Hi folks,
A good friend of mine here in Orkney is looking to buy a CB750 KZ, the DOHC one with the CX rear lamp and four into four exhausts.
Anyone know of a good 'un?

Other Bikes / DVLA and frame numbers
« on: June 09, 2016, 09:31:08 PM »
I have a scruffy looking Honda CBX 250RSE and the lower part of the frame around the centre stand and swing arm is very poor.  It could be stripped and repaired but I have the chance of another frame without docs but clearly visible numbers.
I know that DVLA would slap a Q plate on this if it was a modern bike or car, but does anyone know for definite if they will allow a frame change and keep the original reg on old stuff?
It seems a shame to hack out the good bits of this frame to stitch into the other one.
The frames are only a few hundred numbers apart and same year.

Misc / Open / Motor insurance database - Mobility Scooter
« on: April 12, 2016, 05:46:06 PM »
I seem to have gained rather a large number of Electric Mobility Scooters, German made and apparently with lithium batteries.  Made by a company called Etropolis and the model is Belair.
This came about when I checked to see if my Honda GoldWing GL1000 was all present and correct on the ASKMID database prior to venturing out to get an MOT.
Yes, that number is on the database but the make and model is ETROPOLIS BELAIR, WTF?

I checked most of my other bikes and all came up with the same crap.

I contacted my insurers to see what was going on, to be told that there is a problem they are attempting to fix but all should be fine (perhaps a bad choice of word there) if you get stopped.
Here in Orkney you might think that there would be a zero chance of being pulled over, but Plod is not exactly run off his or her feet, so might just impound me and my bike to relieve the boredom.

Anyway, I got my fresh MOT and then tootled off to the Post office and the very nice lady taxed my very early GL1000 for nowt! I can't believe this stuff is now over 40 years old.

If you live in a plod heavy area it might be worth checking ASKMID,

Misc / Open / Definitive MOT info needed
« on: January 30, 2016, 04:25:39 PM »
Hi folks,
A while back there were lots of press reports about a change to the MOT requirement which said that the first MOT would be moved to FOUR years after 1st reg of a new vehicle.  Our Peugeot will be 3 years old at the end of this month and hence under the old rules will need an MOT.  Does anyone - perhaps we have a MOT inspector amongst us, know for DEFINITE if the old rule ever did get changed or was it just a proposal?

Misc / Open / DVLA does it again!
« on: January 29, 2016, 07:12:09 PM »
I recently bought back my old GL1000 Wing from my Cousin.  It had been sorned for the last 6 months or so.  Did the paperwork, received the new V5c with my name and a new 11 digit reference number.  All Ok so far.  Went on line the same day and tried to SORN it with the new doc ref number.  Computer says NO, vehicle already sorned.  Must have changed the system methinks.  Yesterday I got a 'Last chance ' letter from these morons, telling me to declare SORN or be clapped in irons/deported/hung,drawn and quartered or whatever punishment they now impose.  They gave me 2 options to do this, either by automated system on phone or online.  Tried the 76 options on the phone but it was rejected because SORN already in place!  Tried on line and same result.   So I rang them and after an eternity and another 76 options I spoke to a very helpful young lady, gave her all the details.  I have to download a form, fill it in and send it to them to declare SORN, WTF? 'Can't you just change the details?'  No, you have to send in the form.

I really felt like ignoring this request and having my day in court, but know that one way or other they will win, because they make the rules.
I sent the form today 2nd class signed for which cost £1.59. No, I don't trust them to not conveniently lose my form.

So I have lost a couple of hours of my life and over a quid because their system is flawed!

I wish there was some way of bringing these idiots to book.
