What a gem of a bike, i totally understand why people keep them like this as non riders, where would bike museums be if all bikes were riden , you need to preserve history
The 400/4 is really growing on me, i remember when silvers had a big page add in the back of mcn in the 80,s , you could buy 80% of the parts NOS for these bikes at a real bargin price, i was riding and restoring yamahas and had no interest in these hondas but used to look at the adds and think why cant i buy my yam spares at such low prices

Myself and a few more people on here bought those spares from him way back in '86 Pete when he was still  working at Sondel's in London. He never had a nos seat though ..then years later Honda started making them again and he stocked them. I bought one for 110GBP and then bunged my recovered one with welded base etc,  on eBay and it made almost the same money as a new one cost !

Restoration was very hard then though without the internet. I owned three 400/4's in sucession  and the 3rd got nicked from work and I tried to find a replacement. I advertised everywhere for a good one but nothing to be found, so I bought the one I have now as a scrapper for 100 quid from a Grebo Brit bike dealer to restore  ( amazingly the engine was in really nice condition when I stripped it but I fitted NOS barrels to it). It had a car stoplight located where the  the standard air filter housing is normally.  ( had K&N's). The insurance company NU tried to fob me off with 300 quid for the nicked one (F2 Yellow) but I stuck out and after two years arguing they coughed up 700GBP. I remember their guy calling me giving me a sob story that his boss had told him in no uncertain terms to sort out the claim once and for all on the day he called me up. So he said if I send you a cheque for 700GBP is the matter closed.... I said of course that's what I wanted in the first place.

Nice bikes Pete but you have your sandcast to finish first before taking 'owt else on  ;)

WHY has it got what looks like 444 miles on the odometer? if its unregistered brand new?

All my bikes are going ash except K0 (rider) sandcast (non rider), and a trusty old klr600, i have finally had enough, i did something i thought i would never do and flogged my phil read kit, that was the same passion as a sandcast to me, however  i could never buy a sandcast again but if i wanted to i could always find a PRR,

I think you are doing the right thing Pete. That's exactly what I would have done if I were in your shoes..  So I assume your nice K1 is going too??

All the best Ash

That bike just needs a set of original mirrors to make it complete.

Lol - well spotted. You know how it is, little bits that are not attached get lost over time. That makes it worth, oooo, 3.5K I'd say  ;)

110% agree Pete.... thank god there are folk about who do take the trouble to preserve such things. It's too simplistic to say, "they must be ridden"... to some this could only mean thrashed around a track... and then where would we be?
Best answer is surely to cosset a crated one, whilst maintaining a road going one. But for sure; its nice to see preserved examples. And in defence of such 'hoarders' I'd have to question whether they are indeed greedy / stupid individuals versus forward thinking passionate m/c folk... who due circumstances simply have to sell on. Musn't be too quick to judge etc.
Simon.

.. but I'm sure I can see a number 9 on the milometer just before the light reflection blurs out the rest!

If I sold mine for that much I might recoup some of my losses...

I'd like to hear it running.... To remind me what it sounded like on the day I picked up WGM508T from the dealer in September 1978 !

Is that particular bike actually for sale?
It looks like an ad for their restoration service to me.
