Hi all,
I'd appreciate your thoughts on the two photos.
1. What's the bracket that sticks up from the side of the rear frame arm for? My parts catalogue shows one on each side, but my bike's only got one on the offside (poor thing).
2. There are two holes on each side of the rear frame arms. My parts book suggests that I should only have one on each side to fit the indicator stalks. I guess someone drilled the extra ones for a rack or some such, unless you peeps know better.

The hook is a helmet holder and not sure why you have two holes.

Nice one Trigger,
Helmet holder, eh? I've probably got a sticker in my pack of new stickers to put near there (when I open said packet and apply as the final embellishment to the completed renovation... a bit like applying transfers to a completed Airfix model!).
Not sure where those indicator brackets went. The indicators were fastened to a rack that I'm keeping, for now at least.

Hi Drew,
Aren't there 2 hols for the indicator brackets? One for the mounting bolt and one for an alignment stub.

There are no alignment stubs on my brackets. However, they fit fine and don't slide around thanks to their [ profile design that loops over/under the frame.
Is my bike odd in that respect?

Definitely only one hole each side on my frame. Can't check the indicator mounts as the rear indicators on my bike were on straight stalks.
The holes look a bit big for the mounts trigger suggested, as I recall the mounting screw size for those was only something like M5.
Could have been holes for a rack support. If you still have it were there corresponding holes in the rear mudguard, otherwise the holes would be 'blind'.
Oh, and did you win that fuse box lid?

Hi Chris,
The parts book suggests rubber washers with metal inserts. Found some in my parts bin and hey presto, they look and work fine (to my non-expert eyes and for my rather mongrel bike).
Both of the holes are threaded so that adds to the rack theory. However, I removed some rubbish looking generic brackets so I guess my rack was made for a range of bikes rather than dedicated to 400/4s.... although that still doesn't explain the holes.
Maybe they were a weight saving technique, ha ha... although why thread them?
The fuse box cover went for £13.75 so I missed out. Seemed a bit steep to me for something hidden by the side panel (on a mongrel bike). I may fashion something myself or may not bother.... in the meantime it's another weight saving device!

Here's a pic showing the location of the label for the helmet holder:
My bike has a thin bracket on the nearside, probably what you can see in the parts book. It is a guide for the wiring to the rear lamp.

I'm rubbish at this eBay stuff. It went for £12.25 this time. One day, I'll be able to afford one! In the meantime, I'm getting out my woodworking kit.

Seems the fuse box is not unique to the 400/4 - I didn't know that but you may have.
Might mean you can widen your search for the part though.

Thanks again for your support. As it happens, the wiring from my fuse box is rather dodgy and the unit has signs of melting (not uncommon, apparently). It looks like I'm going to have a new one instead. I'm thinking that this is an important enough part to justify the investment!
In the meantime, I'm sure your post is, or will be, helping others and probably reducing the price of '400-4' versions on eBay... good work!

Make sure you clean up the contacts that the fuse holder fits into. A lot of power going through a high resistance connection = Chernobyl and you'll be back where you started.

Good thinking. Mine will be connecting into the new wiring loom so hopefully we'll be OK.
Part of the problem is the rubbish/damaged connectors in the fuse box end of that wring connector block. It would probably have worked fine for a few more years if I hadn't interfered by stripping the bike and attempting this renovation/rebuild project!

Are there two helmet holders as I have another, smaller upward-facing frame tab a little further forward than the one pictured by Chris?
As you can tell, I've never used them... probably because there were no stickers there previously and I'm too stupid to work this out for myself (and have clearly forgotten something that I took for granted in the 70's)!
I do have two stickers, so that's a big clue.

Yes there are two. The sticker for the forward one is on top of the side panel.

Tom is absolutely right. Side panels weren't on the bike when I did the other photos so didn't notice that one!

Apart from my little electrical problem that stops me trying to fire up the engine for the first time in 18 months (http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,7852.15.html), I have completed everything else in the rebuild... yee haa!
Happy day, even if it is just a lovely sculpture at the moment!
