This month's edition of Classic Bike has a three page feature on the Bomber.

I wouldn’t call the 500 a classic or a bomber…

The brown CB500T must have come from a completely different design department to the CB400F. Although I've generally thought that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that particular bike .......

A respeced member on here who has restored a Bomber or two told me that he had a CB500T back in the day and it was a great bike to ride. I went to my parts stash yesterday and I was looking at the spare K0 Bomber fuel tank I have there ( I had blasted is clean ages ago but it's starting to go rusty now plus a bird has got loose in the building and crapped all over it). I though to myself looking at it without paint or chrome panels  that the shape of it has to be one of the ugliest tanks in the history of motorcyles IMHO.  However, I guess to some people it is a design icon work of art.

I agree with you about the odd looking K0 tank, Ash, it always looked like it was upside down to me. You can see why they had to rush out the scrambler kit to shift bikes in the US, and quickly invent the CL450. They looked great, although I am biased of course. The K1 CB450 made amends though, the tank looks right, as if it was copied from a BSA. Somehow, though, that first Black Bomber, the only 450 Honda I’d actually seen in a showroom, left me with the long term impression that CB450s were fugly. Maybe the later improvements weren’t sold here, I was quite unaware of them at the time.

The CB500T I thought was another styling disaster, with the poo brown seat and ye olde English gold script they managed to achieve ‘old fashioned fuddy duddy’ straight out of the box.

And the 500 electric starter clutch went wrong with great regularity
