Thanks guys,
I think the gates weigh max. around 90kgs each in aluminium so probably less than the steel ones in the photos and would hopefully get less rough treatment.
Agree steel would be more secure but these are really more for privacy and security less crucial.
All feedback sounds good - if it's like digging a bit deeper / bigger fence post hole I'm pretty happy i can do that myself - where I wouldn't tackle big pads with reinforcement etc.

Thanks again,
Andy

Thanks Skoti,
Sounds hopeful - I was getting a bit concerned that Googling turned up lots of advice for enormous foundations with reinforcement etc.
I hope that using the lighter aluminium gates would help keep weight down and reduce need for excessive digging.

Andy

Not sure if there is a limit on how far off topic is permitted but here goes...
Looking to fit aluminium gates to the drive for security / privacy and having spoken to a few specialist companies am thinking of doing most of it myself instead - none inspired any confidence!

I've been trying to find out some at least rough ideas on what is needed for concreting posts into the ground to support the gates.

Thinking about the enormous range of careers / specialities / experience / ingenuity displayed on the forum I thought maybe someone has some knowledge they could share?

Well, from ugly duckling to .... highly polished ugly duckling!
The CJ250T has finally rolled off the operating table and I'm just waiting for a dry day soon so I can get her outside and see if she runs.

It's been great fun restoring the old twin - after doing a few big 4-cylinder lumps everything is so much more manageable!
Spent far more time and money than anyone sane would advise on one of the most undesirable bikes of the time but there's no accounting for taste and for some reason I quite like them.
Last few jobs to do with decals etc. but waiting to get her running before a final tidy up.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Might be of use - had a similar issue with the CJ250t that has a bracket with two plastic coated cable clamps that were badly perished.
Found a work-around using heatshrink and came out OK.

Also needing just a couple of wire ties it seems these are either very pricey or only available in far flung parts of the world so I finally found bare ties from Auto Electric Supplies and then used heatshrink to make a passable version of the original ties.

Might be worth checking National bike tyres.
I had similar issues before Christmas with another supplier but got K82s from National without any problems.

Thanks Bryan,
Never seen one before on other bikes so good to get confirmation it should be there - even if it doesn't work!

CB350/400 / Brake pad spacer
« on: January 01, 2021, 06:40:31 PM »
About to fit the front brake and the pads have come with a plastic ring spacer which looks to fit to the back of the pad and against the piston.
Looks like it fits neatly on the 400 piston so assume it should be fitted.
Haven't seen this before so just wondered if it is common - presumably to allow pads to fit to varying piston sizes maybe?

Cheers,
Andy

Waffey, sorry for slow reply.
Yes I finally got the tyres sorted after a bit of a struggle.
After much googling and checking availability (or lack of), Central Wheel showed they had the K82's in stock so I called to double-check and was told they were in stock and could be sent out for delivery quickly. All good so ordered up, but a few days later got an email saying they hadn't got them after all. Not pleased so cancelled the order rather than wait or go for alternative tyres they had.
I then found the same Dunlops on National Bike Tyres showing in stock and they turned up two days later so very pleased and relieved. Worth checking their website as they show what is in stock and can't fault the service from my (single) experience.
Tyres are 3.00 and 3.50 x 18

Cheers,
Andy

I Know - I've never even thought about rim tape before!
Back in the day all the local bike shops just supplied and fitted the tyres without question.
More recently the bikes I've restored were largely tubeless and the one bike that needed tubes was done by a local bike shop which has now shut down.
The other shops just don't want to do classic / old bike tyres so I've resorted to getting all the bits and getting them fitted - luckily it seems a local guy is happy to fit the tyres and also check over the wheel building / truing I've done so hoping that works out.
I'll hold off ordering the rim tapes for a bit and see if anyone has any feedback - chances are I guess any width will do but just in case...

Andy

Sorry, another question...
Ordering rim tapes for the wheels and there seems to be a range of widths - 20, 22 and 28mm - and I wondered which is correct for these wheels or if it makes any difference etc?

Thanks all,
Must admit I'm struggling a bit to decide!
Looks like I an get ME77's quite quickly and they do have a familiar look to them from years ago on bigger bikes, but maybe not the most classic appearance.
Dunlops look to be on long lead time and I'm keen to get the wheels back on the bike, haven't looked at BT45s but will do shortly
Guess then it's take a stab time and pick one and get them on order - if so looks like it may well be the ME77's as M&P (thanks Bryan for the steer) appear to have them available and at reasonable cost along with inner tubes and rim tapes etc.

Cheers,
Andy

Would that be the ME77 tyres?
Google pops up the ME22 as well but this looks to be a lower rated tyre so presumably not suitable

Not sure if it is any good or if anyone else has tried it but I've been putting Aspen4 into the tanks of a couple of bikes being stood for a while as I saw this mentioned somewhere as being much more stable than normal fuel.

It isn't cheap but if it means the carbs don't need stripping in the spring I'll happily spend a bit!

Cheers,
Andy
