CB350/400 / Re: Head bearings
« on: October 20, 2020, 06:47:51 PM »
Many thanks, that's reassuring and happy now to move on with build.
I guess it just feels wrong to have so little thread
Annoying that they can't just get the parts made correctly - seems it's only a problem with certain models as I've fitted new head bearings to various Suzuki and Honda bikes over the last few years and none have had any issue.

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Head bearings
« on: October 20, 2020, 11:28:16 AM »
Just been fitting steering head bearings to the CJ250T (I know it's not the 400 but very similar!) and had the same issue as on the 400 where the tapered bearings reduce the clear thread on the adjustment nut.
These are JMT bearings from Wemoto, on the 400 I had the same issue with All Balls ones.
After the 400 problems and having the old original bearings to hand I took time to measure them and the bottom one with washer supplied is exactly the same height, the top one comes out around 0.9mm higher.
Once fitted this allows about 2 to 2.5 full turns of the adjustment nut and I wondered if this is enough to be safe or if I need to do further work to get more hold on the thread.
Cheers,
Andy

Allan,
That's a really generous offer thanks and sorry for not replying sooner - still can't get the balance of work to hobby right!
DS say the rims should be in 'shortly' but that could I guess mean anything so if Phil is in more immediate need please tie up with him first as I'd really hate the thought of someone else needing them while they sat in my garage waiting for the bits to arrive!
I can always get / make a stand later if needed as there is no rush to get wheels finished

Bill - thanks, patience isn't one of my strengths so I'll add some to the shopping list as I normally fall back on foul language and bigger, heavier tools when patience runs out.
DS didn't have a firm date on the rims but thought it may be as soon as this week / next week but sounds like it's all a bit hit and miss on delivery dates at the moment for them.

Bryan - thanks for confirming the build sequence. No doubt there will be some questions when the bits arrive.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Finally seems DSS are getting both DID rims in stock shortly so I've ordered these up and am just wondering what tools are worthwhile / essential.

I guess a spoke spanner - Amazon have a few different ones but any recommendations very welcome

Is a stand of some kind essential / useful / just another dust-collecting bit of kit for the garage?

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Caliper dismantle
« on: October 15, 2020, 07:29:18 PM »
Hi,
I've got 3 calipers I'm trying to see if I can fix that came with the 400 and a couple of CJ250Ts in boxes and various states of ruin.
One is with Bryan who has very kindly offered to try fixing a broken nipple so hopefully that will work.
Number two has a broken nipple but with a fair piece still sticking out. I've tried a bit of local heat and soaking but still firm so I wondered if it's any use sticking in an oven for a while to expand the body and loosen the nipple or will the steel expand instead so heat needs to be on the nipple?
The final caliper it seems wouldn't let go of the pad so this has been chiselled away and a hole drilled in the middle right through the pad and piston! I was going to try a blind bearing puller first and again wondered if heat would help loosen the piston if bunged in the oven.
Any ideas welcome.
Cheers,
Andy

Misc / Open / Re: Anyone ever owned a CBX1000?
« on: October 15, 2020, 07:06:30 PM »
Had a brief ride on one back in the 80's in Rotterdam.
At the local bike shop got chatting with a local who was fascinated by my GS1000S so we swapped bikes for a while.
Felt really different to the Suzuki and a bit 'wobbly' at low speed but smooth and powerful and handled fine once moving a bit quicker.
Best thing was always the awesome front view of the bike.

CB350/400 / Re: Legend
« on: October 15, 2020, 05:50:59 PM »
Sorry,
Another question (or 2) ref Legend.
Looking for a new front caliper and DSS and Wemoto both out of stock so I wondered if anyone had tried the Legend one or knew if it was the same etc?
They also show a master cylinder which I was considering but it's a lot more expensive than the DSS or Wemoto one so wasn't sure if it was a better quality or just pricier.

Cheers again,
Andy

Thanks Trigger,
I'm trying to get shocks that look reasonably original - do you know if the DSS ones are better than the Legend ones?

Cheers,
Andy

Project Board / Re: 1977 400F2 first restore project

Hi,
Likewise I love the impact wrench for stubborn fixings.
Have an air one but not too convenient when working in the shed away from the garage so splashed out on an 18v DeWalt one and it's a beast.
Love using it but definitely not for smaller fixings or screws - found a 10v cordless impact driver pretty good for these and much less violent.
Important issue with the wrench is taking care and wearing gloves, glasses etc. as it will happily rip things loose and spin them or distribute loose bits.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi,
Has anyone had stuff from Legend Motorcycles on eBay?
They have shock absorbers, handlebar switches and brake hoses that I was looking at but wondered about quality etc.

Other Bikes / Re: Compression - daft question?
« on: October 12, 2020, 06:19:38 PM »
Thanks,
Put the rocker cover on and compression feels more normal just covering the plug hole so hopefully worried about nothing.
Just seemed odd that with all valves closed there felt to be little compression.
Anyway, relieved that seems OK so can move on again.

Andy

Thanks,
I guess my thinking was why there would be little compression as the valves are all fully closed.
I tried letting air in on the downstroke, then covering the plughole and compression still felt low but you're right I should try with the rockers fitted - I was just leaving this until later for no real good reason!
Will give that a go and hopefully will all be better.

Cheers for swift replies and giving me hope it might be OK!
Andy
