« on: October 23, 2009, 11:20:40 AM »
Carb sync is basically setting the height of each of the throttle slides so that they are all within a certain range.

With the carbs on the bench, look into the inlet side and you should see that each slide has a gap of about 1/8".

Wind the idle screw in (raises all four slides) until the drill shank(parallel part) just slides under the lowest carb the adjust the others down to it so you can then unadjust the idle screw to get a tickover. (BryanJ wrote that last bit a while back)

OR

buy a Carbtune or vacuum gauges - different method of measuring the same thing.

Maidstone - now you are talking!

There's a fairly active group of members in E London and Kent (and I'm in Canterbury fairly regularly)

If you get really stuck and need a second opinion, post here and we'll come over and drink your coffee!

CB500/550 / Re: White Smoke - clears after a few miles and high revs
« on: October 12, 2009, 05:49:41 PM »
White smoke is usually caused by condensation and persists until the engine is properly warmed up.

Blue smoke is burning oil and bad news.

Put your palm over the end of the exhaust and smell the residue - you'll be able to tell whether it is unburnt fuel, oil or just water.

Burning oil = rings or valve stem seals.

When you check the compression, pour a bit of oil down the bores and retest. If the reading goes up significantly (like from 90/100 psi to 150+ psi) then you need a rebore.

If the reading doesn't change, its not the rings so must be the valve stem seals.

Hi Russ.

Welcome over. We love the US guys to bits - but they do sometimes go off at a tangent (don't ever mention guns, health insurance or politics on a US-based forum...)   ;D

Pat - put your location in your profile.

Help is always available (as long as it's not too far!)

Where in Essex?

Fill in your profile so we don't have to keep asking "where are you?"

On this site, we have a history of helping out fellow members that are within striking distance.

Doesn't the 400 have an 18" front wheel?

550 = 19"

EDIT: Yep, just looked in the book. The 400/4 has an 18" front.

Andy.

When posting pictures from Photobucket, paste in the code from the "IMG Code" box rather than the url. It makes the thread much easier to read.

I've done the first one for you  8)

That link doesn't show the page you were intending Mike.

So no idea as to which o-rings you mean.  ???
