Title: self generating ignition
Post by: thescoot on December 01, 2018, 09:28:39 PM
Hi guys. still on with my cr750 build and looking for some advice on the ignition system. Currently, the bike still has the standard rotor and stator but I really don't want to have a battery and have no wish to have an electric start or for that matter lights. I already have a boyer 2 and coils fitted so buying a complete new electrex seems a bit overkill and having spoken to them, they don't want to sell me the stator/ rotor only as they tell me it wont work. They supply the same electronic ignition and coils as I have on the bike ?????? Anyone got any suggestions as to fitting a system with a permanent magnet / stator from another Honda. As far as my limited knowledge goes I only need to supply power or im I being a bit thick?

Try Andy ay Good Bits - he's a dormant member on here and has produced a championship winning CR. He may be able to help

I used an electrex race alternator but use a Lithium battery as I use full road gear except starter motor (which has to be ditched when using the race alternator. (Although Andy is developing a version of the Elextrex unit that accommodates the starter motor.

Thanks for the reply Phil. I know Andy quite well so im aware of the system hes developing to retain the starter which im not going to be doing. You say your using the "race alternator" Does it use a permanent magnet for the rotor or do you still require a battery. And do you know if it can be purchased separately or only as a complete system. Although im pretty handy at most things....ignition systems and electrics in general are not one of them so any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

When I say race alternator, its the narrower lightweight alternator - it does have a permanent magnet but how this would work with self generating system. Andy is better placed to advise me thinks
Just seen this - https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/STK-705.html - you've probably seen it

Cheers for the advice Phil. Greatly appreciated. I am, as you may have guessed, a bit thick when it comes to electrics so I will give Andy a bell and get his thoughts on the best option.

Hi Phil
I use an Electrex World self generating system on my CR750. There is obviously no battery or starter motor. It works very well and you can get the Honda racing magneto cover to fit over the top of it.

Yes. I picked up on it. I have already spoken to electrex regarding one of their systems which is probably the way I will end up going it was just me not wanting to bin a pretty much unused boyer mk3 and coils to replace them with something else. Not only thick about electrics but a bit skint.
