Can't help with your woes at all Tosh but as a reference I have a bike here with VIN CB550K-201292* that was 1st registered in UK on 09/06/1977.
Edit....just thinking out loud, if Honda UK can't identify it, does this mean it is an import ?.

Out and about on Hettie the CB400/4 and Millie, the CB550/4. Grahams riding Millie tonight 😱😱😱 and I'm on Hettie. A lovely ride over the Lincolnshire Wolds and a stop off for a glass of pop. The perfect evening.

I always use supermarket fuels and have never, ever had a problem. My carbs have Viton O rings fitted instead of Nitrile, so more fuel resistant.

Crich Tram Museum holds a classic bike day once a year. Last year and this, some of us on the forum used this as our annual meet. Great day out, all organised for us by Tim, (Rozabikes). Free to get in if you are on a classic bike.

But, you can have it on 3 lines if registered prior to 2001.
