Hi there, I seem to have managed to fettle an extra (rhs) calliper into life & fit it to the 750SS forks I got with the “box of rusty bits” bike I originally bought. All “looks” decent (i’v not had anything working yet) but I need to buy new levers & so I wanted to find out from you guys what size of master cylinder I need to hunt for ont’interwobble? Searches are throwing up 5/8” as a likely candidate. If any of you have any cool looking alternative suggestions for levers, i’m all ears. Also, have any of you advice on the best twin disc hose arrangement? I prefer the look of looping a link hose from one side to the other but suspect that this could a) not be as powerful as running a full length hose to each side & b) could also be more problematic when it comes to bleeding (but both of those are guesses). As ever, thanks for any input. This forum has been a great help in keeping my build going (& importantly, going in the right direction).

Thanks for your comments Matthew, As it goes, I will be dropping the clamps down the forks so could be worth a trial at least. I'll check out the frame clamped option as well. Failing that, I'll just have to find a hill every time I park up Has anyone else any info to firm up a decision?

Hello again, I didn't get a side stand in the '76550 K2 "box of bits" that I bought to build so I was wondering - as I've no need to generally fit model specific items - what other models I could search for that will fit & work. As I'm building a brat/cafe bike, I like the "minimalist" look of the attached stand (listed on fleabay as a CB500 K1 / K2) & have seen the there are similar stands for many other CB models (350, 360, 400, 650 etc.). So, I'm expecting the main question is over the length but I can also see a possible query over the pivot size. As every, many thanks in advance of any help / advice you can offer. Andy

Thanks Matthew, Having blown apart the engine & glued it all back together myself (with no experience & “only” a manual, the internet & you guys for help), there’s every chance the end result may never fly again so actual working brakes might not be required. And with cafe/brat builds being all about the “look”, it’s probably worth giving it a shot (there’s always going to be a fleabay market out there if it proves a bust). Seriously tho, thanks for the sound advice, i’ll do some more digging before making any move. It would be nice if the cleaner 500/550 plate fit but not at the expense of making close aquaintances with any of the many friendly North Yorkshire dry stone walls we’ve got round here

Thanks Bryan, I didn't get chance to check things out over the weekend but have this pic of the "Millennium Falcon" plate I (currently) have if it helps with identification (650)? Ultimately, I'd like to hunt down a pair of CB wheels but the comstars I have will have to do for now so it would be great if someone could confirm options I'd have for alternative plates. Cheers, Andy

Hi all, So I’m wearing my Sherlock Holmes hat again trying to work out what parts i’m pulling out of the boxes I bought this ‘76 Frankenstein project in (the more I dig, the more it seems I was buying a garage clearance than a broken up CB550 ). Not to worry though, it just makes for a more “interesting” experience all round. Anyway, the wheels that I had thought were CX500 Comstars, could actually be from a late 70s / early 80s CB650 based on the brake panel I have & I was wondering what options I have for alternative panels that will be compatible? I prefer the cleaner look from the CB550 (less “bracing” involved) & wanted to know which models I could hunt out appropriate parts from? As ever, any help will be much appreciated & gratefully received. Thanks everyone, Andy

As another Northerner Bryan, I had my suspicions (& love the cartoon btw Hairy). Keep it up both!
A nut/bolt (& big washer) seems an easy enough addition. A bit “belt n brace” maybe but an easy fit (no rip-off labour rates if i’m doing it all on my tod).

Thanks, I’ll see how we do turning it around (it will neaten up the area I’ve got to navigate with the new seat pan / seat so worth getting it right). As for the holes being for “ventilation”......somehow that doesn’t sit right?

Anyone any ideas on what these holes above one another in the tank & frame are about / for?

Actually, looking back at the 1st image I posted, the gap doesn't look that big really. So, your suggestion NG might well be a lead runner . Particularly as it seems foolish not to take advantage of using the already upturned, press formed spaces in the frame to locate a couple of pegs within the base which means I'll be slotting the seat down & forward before dropping pegs in the rear into a bar I've attached across the back end of the frame just in front of the seat hoop. I can feel it coming together already

So I squished, pulled & slotted it into place this morning & it all worked quite simply, as described (thanks again). Just out of interest, is the hole in the bracket (flange?) that comes off the tank used? It corresponds to a hole beneath in the frame (that's larger). That particular CMS microfiche isn't the easiest to read & I can't see anything that corresponds. As for closing that gap, I can see it could be a tricky one but plan to solve it somehow. As it happens - although I class it as a "cafe" build - I've more of a brat seat style in mind. I might lift the nose of the foam slightly (as shown in your "Pire" pic K2) so I can follow the rear profile of the tank (or may consider moding the tank Trigger ). Squeezing the seat under the arch sounds interesting but (as mentioned by Trigger) the tank is distinctly wider that the frame at that point so will also need a bit of head scratching (but isn't that half the fun ).

OK, so the rubber piece is 1stly, the wrong way round (that “tab” should still be uppermost but pointing towards the back of the bike) & when installed correctly, joins the tank to the frame by sliding it 1st, over those 2 frame tabs & then lowering the tank & stretching it over that flat(ish) part of the tank. Have I got that right? The seat then just has to meet that rubber piece & follow the profile of the rear end of the tank? Should be doable if I’m reading things right. Thanks for the help.

Hi all, So my cafe build has come to the seat making stage & as I’ve never seen how the rear end of a standard 550 tank fits to the frame, I’ve no idea what I’ve got to fabricate, to work up to (the piece of perforated is just a start). Can someone describe the method of locating the tank & the ultimate arrangement (with the plates, flaps, rubber piece & holes that can be seen in the photo) or direct me to a link or images etc. that will help me understand what I’m aiming at please? Many thanks for any help offered from your immense pool of collective knowledge. Andy

Thanks Jon, Can't believe I hadn't adjusted my view to include other studs (generally so focused on Honda parts ). Consider myself "schooled". Cheers, Andy
