Title: starter clutches.
Post by: royhall on September 07, 2019, 03:47:08 PM
Am just rebuilding a starter clutch (CB450) and the Clymer manual says to pack it with Silicone high temperature grease. I have never done that before, I usually just use clean engine oil. Is this correct or just overkill.

Does it run dry on that motor or subsequently bathed in engine oil?

Runs in oil.

Maybe as you say it's overkill as oil will take precedence in use.

Silicon grease I think would be the right application though,  it's slippery on surface but doesn't appear to have much shear strength properties which is exactly what the sprag clutch does to it.  Shear it that is.

I use it on quite a few applications,  just the plumbing supplies Polypipe SG100 which is easy to get.

Makes a really good seal on electrical plugs etc as it's virtually impervious to water.

Probably won't hurt to use a bit of silicone grease. It will at least be lubricated until the hot oil reaches it and washes the grease out.

Anyone used silicone grease on their starter clutch?
