Title: What does CB stand for?
Post by: Bitsa (Ralph Wright - RIP) on November 10, 2014, 07:22:47 PM
Hi Guys an Gals
When viewing what all and sunder is reading the above subject comes up quite a bit.You may all fall about laughing but for some time in the back of the bonce I recall at Honda Chiswick back in the 70s they told me it stood for continental Bike.Might make sense as it was designed for all the continents don't know but it still wanders around the dense stuff
Cheers

I wrote a FAQ on this for .net many years ago (2005!).  Here it is:

There have been various answers over the years.
Here's a few from the archives:

City Bike - quite a popular choice

Cool Bike

Chris' Bike

CB comes from the Japanese words "Cobasha - Biokeosan" meaning "Combustion Bicycle".

Also:
"K" stands for "Kairyo" or "Improvement". So, K1 would mean Improvement #1 (jonesdp)
"F" stands for "Four", or "Faster" (?)

I know for a fact that GXSR means "organ donor" - Evil Don...

Steve
You may well be right like the combustion example the rest don't think so.
I can not tell you exact but at Honda Chiswick and its been floating around in my head for some time I am sure that's what they said.Bryan was around at that time I wonder if he can recall anything from his time there and I assume he went to Chiswick too.

Some of the others were a bit tongue in cheek...

An old friend rather disparagingly  told me it stood for 'commuter bike'.  ;)

Does anybody know this guy (Roger Etcell)  ex-Honda UK who is restoring DSS CB92 Benly? Not sure if he also works (worked) for Bonhams auctions.

He is also a private assessor but, is not cheap.
