CB500/550 / Rear Swing Arm play
« on: October 09, 2022, 05:20:36 PM »
I have just noticed there is play in my rear swing arm. If I grab the rear wheel I can move the rear arm side to side quite a bit.

I am a bit unsure about how to fix this as both Honda manuals I have are not a lot of help.

Yes I have greased it and yes I have checked the nuts are tight !!!

Any advice on how to proceed much appreciated

Hi all, just had the 550 out a run after front brake Caliper clean and Dot 5 upgrade. Cant believe that horrible squeak has gone (for now). As read hear under someone’s recommendation just mearly removed outer edge of pads and that appears to have sorted it. Happy Days!😁 (And quieter too)

Can you put the link to the fix you refer to. My 500 front brake squeal has driven me nuts for years and tried many things

Hi all. Could I have a hands up from those that have booked their bikes in for Crich. I will update Jon Lambly on the anticipated numbers.
Many thanks

I will be there, ticket 211

Thanks for all the replies

I have decided that as the play is very little will leave it and add to my winter to do list

Rather just be out riding now it’s warmer 😀😀😀

CB500/550 / Swingarm play?
« on: April 15, 2022, 07:56:00 AM »
Just noticed that if I push rear wheel there is a small amount of play movement in the swingarm.

How much play should there be (I assume the answe is none)?

Is it a difficult job to fix and what parts do I need to buy?

Thanks all

I once fitted mine the wrong way round. If you do it is impossible to get the timing chain on so sounds like you did it right

Im no expert but mine rattles as well when cold. I think from what i have seen over the years on various sites this is not unusual

Did you change the primary chain on the rebuild as this doesn't
 sound like valves to me

I went round the houses trying to fix the same problem and got very frustrated.

As Trig says there is an issue with the thickness difference between aftermarket head gaskets and OE ones.

I finally cured mine by……….

1 Using an OE gasket (DSS can supply)

2 Having the head skimmed to ensure it was flat

Since I did the above no probs at all.

Would these stop my front brake from squealing, I have tried all sorts of times but they still squeal.

Our Esso Super says E5 but is E0 for now. Worth doing some digging on corporate web sites or asking their customer support people as localities vary. Ethanol water lightly rusted my tank which I had to line.

Yes Esso super is Ethanol free see below taken from Esso web site. Luckily this is also my nearest garage 👍👍👍

Although our pumps have E5 labels on them, our Synergy Supreme+ 99 is actually ethanol free (except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland). Legislation requires us to place these E5 labels on pumps that dispense unleaded petrol with ‘up to 5% ethanol’, including those that contain no ethanol, which is why we display them on our Synergy Supreme+ 99 pumps.

There’s currently no requirement for renewable fuel, like ethanol, to be present in super unleaded petrol although this could change in the future, in which case we would comply with any new legislation.
