CB350/400 / Re: carburettor overhaul and seized screws
« on: September 05, 2018, 04:07:46 PM »
I had difficulties with mine and sorted with a JIS driver !!

They are expensive but one of the best investments I ever made

VESSEL are a good brand, I bought this set and have never looked back

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JIS-Screwdriver-Set-Vessel-Megadora-P1-P2-and-P3-12705-6-8/171753460588?epid=1342330113&hash=item27fd4dd36c:g:5ckAAOSwmCVY~LCG

I am assuming here you are referring to the 2 small screws that hold the needles in place at least this is on the 500, are they the same carbs on the 500. If so and you do need to replace they are an M3x10 screw - should be easy to find anywhere cheap

If you really cant get them out, personally I wouldn't sweat they only hold the needles and these should not wear. As long as you can knock out the emulsion tube and ensure all is clear. (Again this is 500 speak)

MOST important in my experience is Ultrasonic clean everything you will re-use, especially the carb bodies they have ver very small channels in them for the idle air circuit

I can only recount my experiences

My 500 four came from US and was seized.

I tried every witches  brew known to man I think and all to no avail and ended up cutting the chain to get the head off.

As to the pistons I found if you split the cases etc you can just get the big end bolts off and then pull the jugs off with the pistons and rods still on. This way you are dealing with freeing one piston at a time which is much easier if they are really tight. Mine we so tight I ended up having them pressed out in a machine shop. As to why they were so tight I never figured that out as the bores were perfect original spec and only needed honing.

As to chain I ended up using a split one from DS for long and complicated reasons due to a mistake I made on the rebuild and it has been fine. Many many folks do a chain replacement this way on a wide range of bikes with no problems. Of course endless always best but IMO splits are ok.

If I were you I would take the opportunity to do a full strip and check as others have suggested while you are in there in which case obviously go endless chain.

Depends how long they have been sitting around for. The rubbers go off if they have been on shelves for years. I know this as some years ago i bought a job lot of old stock and sold them off one at a time. The first 6 came back before i realised that the rubbers had gone hard and leaked.
Why a new one ? Just rebuild the old one  ;)

The outlet pipe has come out of the body a while ago and I bodged with JD but it’s come off again so time for new I think the DS and K&L ones are not so pricey

CB750 / Re: Getting cb750k on centre stand
« on: August 15, 2018, 09:47:44 AM »
Try a Triumph Trophy 1200 there a big top heavy bastard there's no way I can lift that in a dress and heals.

I concur it's all about geometry and mechanical advantage etc.  I had a 1200 Trophy and fitted Lust lowering links as it was too tall for me.

Just that small change in height meant there was no way I could heave it on to the centre stand.

Solution I had the stand shortened by around 15mm and hey presto it was, I wont say easy but easier !! The Trophy is a 350Kg massive lump but I Still think the Triumph designers should have spent more time engineering better leverage geometry.

What I am saying in short is that small changes in ride height due to different shocks, tyres etc can have a really big impact on effort

If you are not fussed about being completely original then INOX fasteners do kits if bolts for the 500. I have used them and their service is good.

I use Paraffin and a brush, wont shift oxidation but great for shifting gunk

The mounting bolts are missing but sure that wont be a big challenge

You ever been to Lincolnshire :-)
I can walk 200 feet to scrump a fresh cauliflower out of the field or i can drive 6 miles to Tesco to buy one thats 2 weeks old. When I'm out across the fields with the dogs, I  can get enough fresh supplies to last the week. They don't know what they're missing do they Si ;D ;D

Isn’t that a hanging offence stil in Lincolnshire lol

Finally got it sorted with Hastings as a renewal of last year for my modern and four for 180

Weird thing is one guy one day said they could no longer insure my four but called again next day and said it was a 71 CB500 and that magically was fine!!!!!!

£105 for my 2016 Yam Tracer so adding the four was 75 which was ok

I did also find a good breakdown deal with AutoAid Breakdown who do a policy that also covers home start for me and my wife on any vehicle including our cars and bikes for £48

Sorry, lied £69.00  ;D

Called Swinton and they quoted £105, I  mentioned your policy price and they said "we have never quoted a policy at a price as low as that !!!!"

They then quoted me £474 to include my '16 reg Tracer which I can get for £105 with my exisiting insurer (Hastings)

Clearly I am being bulled by Swinton here since your policy clearly exists

God I hate this trawling around its worse than energy suppliers and that is really saying something

Oh I hate this annual bash !!!

Last year my 16 Yamaha Tracer and the Four were £153 with Hastings

Now Hastings, Bennets and others will not cover the Four as they say its classification has changed to an AB7 or something

Carole Nash quoted me £323 for both which is more than 2X what I Paid last year

I can get 2 separate quotes at £105 on the Tracer with Hastings and then a further £124 for the Honda with Footman James but prefer to have both on same policy

Any recommendations anyone I hate having to go through this nightmare every damn year

Has become somewhat sticky and jumpy above 60

Know cable and drives and cushions are all ok

Is there a way of lubricating the internals without stripping it?

You meet the nicest people on a Honda  :)

The snobbiest people on a Harley
The most conceited on a BMW
The angriest on a Triumph

ETC ETC

I also noticed on the way home that Harleys must have some sort of anti fall over device fitted since most riders seem to wear shorts/tank tops etc.

I even saw one guy with full textiles with his missus on the back with thin pants and rope shoes - what a caring hubby  ;) - crazy !!!!!!!!!!
