Has become somewhat sticky and jumpy above 60

Know cable and drives and cushions are all ok

Is there a way of lubricating the internals without stripping it?

You meet the nicest people on a Honda  :)

The snobbiest people on a Harley
The most conceited on a BMW
The angriest on a Triumph

ETC ETC

I also noticed on the way home that Harleys must have some sort of anti fall over device fitted since most riders seem to wear shorts/tank tops etc.

I even saw one guy with full textiles with his missus on the back with thin pants and rope shoes - what a caring hubby  ;) - crazy !!!!!!!!!!

Great to catch up with all the gang yesterday, have to have a small moan about having to park up the hill as well as I was there at 10:30 (I wasn't aware Goldwings fell in to SOHC territory !!)

Julie - I loved your 550 by the way, I don't normally like the concept but yours is just right !!

Seriously hot but enjoyable ride home via Ashbourne and Cat and Fiddle and the 4 is running really well. Still impressed I can keep up with a lot of "new" machinery on the twisties on something now 47 year old!!

Roy -  if you ever want to hook up in the North West for a ride out and a brew and a chat then just pm me I am generally free most Fridays maybe I can get my buddy Geoff with the black 4 to make a threesome (no comments please!!)

Would you believe it, just as I was posting my quality, Quality Street, replacement, picture above, a mate knocks and he’s only gone and found it. He knew roughly where I’d lost it and was driving that way today. He said he thought he’d seen it on the verge and pulled in at the next lay-by. He walked back to what he’d seen and it was a Macdonalds bag. He turned to go back to his car and there was the side cover, upside down, so not showing the colour. I’m over the moon.

Guess I can always put my mock up on eBay

Can’t be as bad as when my topbox flew off one day

Luckily it missed a guy on a bike not far behind me who kindly stopped at the lights next to me and rode back to show me where it was

Looking good👍

No problem Paul, just went onto Google Earth and it's farther from the A6 than I remembered, not visited there for over 30 years and the old memory was telling me it was just outside of Matlock Bath and it's not after looking at the map. I gather we don't go in by the gates near the Town Hall then?

I cant remember exactly but when there it's obvious, I just followed the exhibitor signs

368
Sorry Roza but are we exhibitors and as such use the exhibitors entrance? and on the map whereabouts is the main road, which is the A6 IIRC. Can't orientate myself enough to know where to go.

Ken I went last year so just follow me in !!

Here is a picture that hopefully helps explain where to find the pilot air circuit holes

I had a similar issue with my 500 when I first rebuilt it - just stuttered off the line and running badly at low revs.

This sounds similar to me and in my case it was absolutely traced to blockages in the idle circuit once I cleaned the  carbs ultrasonically and renewed the pilot jets it ran like a different animal altogether.

This definitely sounds a carb/over rich mixture issue.

You said you had the carbs rebuilt by Gerben and I know he does outstanding work and I am not throwing any rocks here don't get me wrong but I would pull the carbs and check the idle  circuits these are VERY fine bore holes and easily blocked.

Below is a write up I did a while back on how to check the idle circuits

The idle circuit consists of 3 holes and the pilot jet.

hole 1 can be seen on the carb wall on the inlet side throat at 90 degrees from the top before the throttle slide, this actually joins in to the hole from the air screw by the way.

Hole 2 is a VERY small one at the base of the throat on the exhaust side at 180 degrees from the top just in front of the throttle slide. This is where the idle mixture is fed in to the cylinder.

Hole 3 is where the air bleed screw goes in.

At idle air is drawn from hole one and the air screw then adjusts the amount of incoming air, this is then mixed with fuel from the pilot jet To provide the idle mixture.

The resulting mixture then squirts out of the very small hole (hole 2) at the front of the throat in to the cylinder.

I found the best way to check for blockage in the whole pilot circuit is to remove the pilot jet and air screw and blow down the air screw hole and at the same time cover the pilot jet hole and the other 2 holes with some combination of fingers and thumbs. You can then lift a finger or thumb from each hole in turn and hear if you get air blowing through.

It's a bit like mastering playing the bagpipes but an effective way to check the circuit for blockage.

This may sound complicated but if you find the holes and study the plenum chamber in the base of the carb it's pretty obvious how it works.

Does the rattling sound like metal or just years of loose "stuff". I went for the CMSNL aftermarket pipes on my build but I started with 2 rusty 2-1 aftermarket MAC pipes rather than original OEM ones. The problem is you cant get the baffles out or disassemble in any way so I'd see if there is some way to clean them out first before investing in replacements (they are very pricey) to see if its just bits of loose rust rattling around inside.

Looks a good project, like Julie says at least it’s all there and looks generally sound

Lots of fun to come I suspect and this forum has loads of expertise and help

Crack on I say👍👍👍

Yes.the most I have ever put in was 13,98 l8tr

I was running on reserves

Just out of interest what mileage does anyone get before hitting reserve roughly.

I get around 95 miles  which would indicate 44mpg by my maths
