CB500/550 / Tank Capacity
« on: June 13, 2018, 09:29:25 AM »
Honda Tech Spec says 14L and 4L reserve.

Does this mean 10L before I hit reserve and then I have 4L left i.e. is 14L the TOTAL capacity?

Hi,

Just had an email through about this years event on the 1st July.

Last year went down well with those who went I think. Personally now when I read many posts, I can relate to them more - knowing the "character"** behind it. (**substitute a word of your choice!).

This years brochure accompanying below. Who's in then?

Let you know more when I receive further info.

Count me in too

Somewhere i have a set where one carb had a float post broken off, if i can find them and if No3 is not broken yours for postage

Thanks found a good one in USA for £30 now so don’t worry. Luckily I work for a us company so colleagues can hand carry stuff over when they come come over here😀😀

Anyone got one in their pile of bits they would be willing to part with, for a fee of course

The air vent pipe has snapped off on mine, probably doesn’t matter as long as the carbs are free to vent still but knowing it’s missimg will eternally bug me I know

« on: May 16, 2018, 06:45:11 AM »
May sound a daft question but am just rebuilding my carbs and wondered if i can test the float level using water (off bike of course !!!)

Just hate messing around with petrol all over the place

But maybe water has some different physical property from petrol that means its not feasible

Also does the level need to be about 2mm below the bowl/body joint from memory?

I found that testing with water doesn't work!

I had a fuel drip from the float bowl overflow pipe on my 400/4. It had new float valves but I checked the one that was dripping for dirt and made sure it was seating ok. Still dripping.  :(

I'd read that the brass overflow pipes sometimes crack and cause a leak so I took off the float bowl again and filled it with water. No leaks, so it must be ok, right? Wrong.

Well known issue is hairline cracks in the overflow pipe. I once spent ages trying to chase down what I thought was a float valve not seating only to eventually spot this hairline crack

I tried fixing it with jd weld but eventually petrol ate its way past it and gave up and sourced a new float bowl but they are getting harder to find at sensible prices

When I checked the bowl again with fuel it didn't leak at first, but after a minute or so it started dripping very slowly and the outside surface of the external pipe was wet. It must be finding a way down the side of the pipe between the aluminium bowl and the pipe.

I won't check with water again.  >:(

Rule of thumb: the floatlevels are NEVER wrong unless floats have been messed with. I sure hope this American epidemic doesn't spread here.
As bike is 40+ years old, Rule of thumb is check the float levels, as you never know what previous idiots, err i mean owners have done.
Unfortunately too many mistake another problem for an incorrect floatheight. Incorrect fuelline length and diameter (kinking), good-for-nothing 'extra' inline fuelfilters that intermittently hinder fuelflow and sticking valveneedles. It takes very little indeed, to disturb the gravity feed of just a few centimeters difference in height. I would start with having the correct fuellines and - especially after hibernation - eliminating sticking valve needles. An additive may help. I myself have never encountered a CB500/550 float that needed to have it's tang adjusted.
The correct dimensions for CB500 fuellines is 18 and 30 cm (old style petcock) or 17 and 28 cm for models that had the newer type petcock. ⌀ 5,5 mm.
You are missing the point, Check does not mean adjust and previous owners, to blythly refurb which original poster is doing without checking everything would be foolhardy.

Concur whats the point of stripping the carbs, ultrasonic clean, new jets and O rings and NOT checking float levels !!!!

BAck to my original question should the level be about 2 mm below the bowl/body join line. I am sure I have seen a number of posts on this but cant seem to locate obe

Better off using petrol as anything else has a different densities and the floats will be at different levels, just be sensible and you will be fine.

That’s what I thought given my aged memory of physics and eureka

CB500/550 / Re: 550 chain
« on: May 11, 2018, 01:19:26 AM »
One thing which to me spoils the look of my k2 is the dull appearance of the chain.  Would like to change it for a new 0 or X ring gold plated one. Last time I trawled the internet there didn't seem to be any available in the correct size. Does anyone know if this is still the case?

I am assuming 500 and 550 chains are same and if so I got a very nice gold Choho chain along with a sprocket set from M&P for a very reasonable £44.99

Part numbers are
Chain 609585
Front sprocket 028817 17 teeth
Rear Sprocket 028234 34 teeth

Having said that I also recall that the 550 uses a 37 tooth rear sprocket so you will need to check part numbers for the 550

CB500/550 / Great service from CMSNL but I wonder
« on: May 11, 2018, 01:05:12 AM »
In a bid to fix my horrible sounding no 1 exhaust I emailed them along the lines of I bought these 2 years ago and surprised to see a baffle failure after only 2k dry miles

I have to say great service as they have replaced it at no cost but looking at their web site I have got to wondering....

They list single pipes for 2 3 and 4 cylinders but always show a single pipe for no 1 as unavailable

This has got me wondering if there was an original known manufacturing issue with no 1 and they have pulled my replacement unit from a full set which is why there is no availability of no 1 pipes

I believe DS use the same supplier as well but may be wrong

So I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of any similar problems

Steve, I'm out the other side, about 1/2 mile north of the Thames bridge.
Trig, You've done more than me and I haven't had to use it on the cover, but I have found them to be the most stubborn screws on the whole bike, particularly if someone has already been at them and are slightly mangled. Most of the engines I have done have been well neglected and butchered by previous owners and maybe lying in a shed for 20 years. Nothing else has worked for me.

I am with Phil here.

On my rebuild I intended to change the o ring etc but whatever I tried I could not shift those 3 screws and eventually gave up. Thankfully all was ok but I dread ever having to get them off at a future date. They were without doubt the worst 3 fastenings in the whole engine!!!

CB500/550 / Help with Cruzinimage carb kit
« on: May 10, 2018, 12:30:23 AM »
Help
I just received my rebuild kit and am puzzled

In the pic I can identify

3 different size main jets
Pilot jet
Air mixtutre screw and spring
Emulsion tube, needle and clip
Float valve

What I am confused about are the additional o rings as I am not sure where they should go

I guess the 4 larger ones are for the fuel inlet connectors and the two others maybe for the bowl drain screws but you only need 12 of these in total across all carbs and also why 4 of 1 and 2 of the other in each kit so now I have 16 in total across the 4 kits!!,

As to the 1 very small o ring I have not got a clue

I should ad d I have bought also fron Gerben a Viton set of O rings as well  to replace these with and he supplies exactly what I would expect so I am a bit puzzled

Can anyone enlighten me please
