Do you mean this retainer and tool Ted?



If so, I recently bought the tool and an aftermarket retainer from a different supplier and the tool didn’t fit correctly, as you can see. When I contacted them, they checked their stock and found the new batch of retainers didn’t fit the tool but the original Honda retainers did. They sent me a genuine Honda one as a replacement which was fine. I wonder if DSS has the same issue?

Having similar issues with Lazarus at the moment so have moved the needle to middle groove, haven't tried it out yet as our dog has had an operation so looking after her is taking priority over bikes!

I never have much luck sawing the old bushes so made a simple tool. A thick washer the diameter of the hole in the swing arm but too big for Bush. File 2 flats on washer to allow it to pass through Bush then drop through to other side and drive Bush out with long drift. Easy! Also recommend bushes sold by Julie.

I do have it and struggle at times with my lungs, I will be interested in how it works out for you over a period of time. We are coming into spring and summer though which does make a big difference for me.

I used the bushes that Julie sells in my 400 & 500 - they are spot on.

I put the replacement bushes in the freezer overnight then drited them in with out too much difficulty.

I don't recall any removable inner steel tube, it is shown in the parts book - I obviously left mine as it was.

Thats extremely helpful and I now understand - having properly cleaned the area I can now see. So I remove the inner steel tube, cut out the old bushes, mask, paint, knock the new bushes in, put the steel tube back in, refit arm, re-fit retaining bolt, re-grease? Thanks so much! Mike

It's all original as far as I can see inside but the carbs aren't the originals of my 10000 mile bike, there's wear on the cable nipple holders indicating some more use than 10k...otherwise it all looks original with the oe stamps on the needle and jets.

Julie the needle is on groove four from the top, I understand that's where the US bikes were, is that right? The carbs aren't flooding so it's got to be the jets or needle position for it to run so rich?
I've Tourmax kits on the way, would you suggest an alternative fix?

The old ones you are referring to are like a bakolite. Cut a chanel in them and remove them before powder coating etc. Just cut lengthway with a hacksaw blade and prise out. Then cover the ends for powder coating. I sell the bronze bush replacements.
