Title: I've bought UK Pete's Ruby Red K1
Post by: Andrew-S on December 21, 2018, 08:16:41 PM
Well, after a very short search for a decent 750 K1 I have bought UK Pete's Ruby Red, 20,648 mile, 1971 survivor and picked it up today.  It's been standing unused for about 3 years with fuel in the tank, and it's minging.  So my first job tomorrow is to empty the tank and give it a clean out as there is some internal surface rust to deal with - that'll hopefully stop my garage smelling like I've left a pair of 3 week old sweaty trainers, the socks, the sweatshirt and shorts in there..... There's a few little dings here and there, but nothing I'm bothered about and I'm looking forward to getting it started in due course, once 'normal safety precautions' are taken.

All-in-all, I'm very happy with the bike and Pete is a really decent and genuine bloke - but then I guess many of you already know that.

I now need to take some time over Christmas and think carefully what I want to do to it - in the meantime, here's a 'few' photos and no doubt I'll be picking your brains in the near future.

Oh, and I've bought my first bit for it; an OE grab rail which was missing, and the fact that I fitted it before I loaded the bike into the van caused Pete some amusement.

Ok. So it’s snuggled down next to a Z.

What’s under the red/black cover?

Thanks folks, I'm very pleased with the K1.

I spent yesterday pawing all over it and taking loads of reference photos.  It is a great bike and in remarkable original condition, it'll need a new paintset eventually and a few other parts replaced - NOS or good used OE when ever possible.

My priority is to get it started and see where I go from there. So I drained the old fuel yesterday (minging stuff) and will need to treat the surface rust that lines the tank - ethanol is satin's liquid! I've been recommended 'Metal Rescue' to cure the tank - anyone used this stuff before, it's not cheap at about £30 for 414ml concentrate (makes a gallon), see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBQX5v4FmzI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBQX5v4FmzI)

Pete coated it in ACF50, a good move and it's done a good job. But I now want to remove it, so before I go just smear it and make it worse by using the wrong products/process, anyone got any experience of getting this stuff off?

I usually,  just  polish the metal with autosolve without removing any traces of acf50

That'd be right Pete, I read all this crap on the tinternet about how difficult it was to remove - should have just given it a go!  ::) :D

Andrew - I use Bilt-hammer Deox-C to derust my tank internals. You Do need to flush out any gunk/varnish residue first. I normally remove the stale fuel, then degrease / flush (if you’re careful you can use a pressure washer lance to clean out internally. Then make up a Deox-c solution with hot water and fill the tank with the solution warm.

Yes I done a tank with 5hat stuff, then coated it with a diesel film as the tank wants to rust straight away

Bit of progress on the K1 today, spent 4 hours cleaning up some of the sharp end - tried a new product (to me) for cleaning and protecting chrome and plastics; 'Quick-Glo', pretty happy with the result after the first effort:

Been using that stuff for many years as we have a 40 litre heated bath of it where I work BUT .. don't leave any chromed parts in it for an extended period as I left a CB250K front guard in it and it started to strip the chrome under where the original pitting was. Having said that a quickish immersion of a USA 500/4 rear guard worked wonders on the underside.
