Hi all and a happy new year I have just had a quote from Ashford chrome to plate a cb400f2 front mudguard A staggering £600 inc vat Now that would make Jesus shed a tear or two It made me take a sharp intake of breath Replica ones can be had for £174 You don't need to be a genius at maths to work that one out Why is chrome so expensive I was expecting to pay around £100 Can Anybody recommend a reasonable plater please or its the replica route
Cheers Ross

Having had rebore with new pistons and the head refurbed Engine rebuilt using all new internals Carbs rebuilt It now starts on the button runs and revs freely Just done a compression test as a check and all 4 cylinders show 122-124 I was expecting 150 plus Had a leak down test done and all is ok with the head ( no leaks passed valves) and all cylinders show under 4% The only leak noise is heard in crankcase through oil filler Do you think ive missed something doing the rebuild Or will it get better when i can get some road miles on it Cheers Ross

HiAll. After taking a year off to move house to Norfolk and do it up I am now back in the garage Set up the engine which now runs like a watch Easy to start idles nicely Only problem it won’t start off the button When I short the solenoid it starts. Have checked the solenoid across the battery and it clicks so switching The Green and Red wire from the solenoid goes to the Silicon Rectifier A new loom has been fitted but the rectifier differs between the old and new loom Will this be the problem? The supplier of the new loom suggested trying another rectifier Which I have but still no go see attached photos the image of the diode differs - +. +. - with a diode allowing current flow only in one direction this can’t be right Help not much hair left Cheers Ross

Just fitting a new rear sprocket and it seems a lot of play Not much rotational just a little bit of movement within the bolt holes of the sprocket The bushings seem ok But lateral play there is at least 1/8" old money Is this the norm Also the rear spindle The PO has put it with the nut on the sprocket side Looking in the parts catalogue thats right Yet in the service manual shows nut on brake side which i believe to be correct Your thoughts appreciated Cheers Ross
