Member 4 Sales / Petrol tanks!!!
« on: August 20, 2023, 10:31:05 AM »
Having a garage clear out after selling my 550F2. Came across these 2 petrol tanks. The Black one has a rusty hole at the rear.
The Red one has small holes at the bottom and appears to have some sort of a bodge tank sealer inside, which comes out quite readily.
If anyone wants them feel free to come and pick them up anytime.
These are Free no payment required.

CB500/550 / Tank badges
« on: October 15, 2020, 06:31:46 PM »
I have just taken my CB550F2 tank for a refurb and re-paint etc.
I have a set of silver with black background HONDA tank badges.
The centre to centre distance between the badge mounting holes is 80mm.
I seem to think the tank mounting points are a different distance apart, smaller I think.
I’ve e-mailed the painter to ask him to measure the distance between the mounting points on the tank.
What is the normal distance between mounting points?
How are the badges fitted to the tank?
Is Silver with Black background the correct badge?
Thanks. Bill W.

CB500/550 / 1977 CB550F2 seat.
« on: February 11, 2020, 06:14:31 PM »
Hi,

As part of the ongoing process to get my 1977 CB550F2 sorted, I have decided to start on the seat. The base has been sorted. The foam insert is worn and the original cover has a small tear in it. I am happy to replace the foam, unless you know anyone who can cut out , fill, and reshape the foam. Also looking for someone to repair the seat cover. Looking for recommendations.
Thanks

CB500/550 / CB550 F2 Airbox
« on: January 25, 2020, 07:03:51 PM »
And so the search goes on.

In a previous post I described how the 550F2 I bought had come with 4 bell mouths on the carbs, and I was wanting to take it back to the original airbox.

Two members have come up with generous offers of, the carb to the airbox chamber(13) and the air filter box(14) and the brackets that the air cleaner box fits to the air chamber from the carbs with (3, 4, 15 and 17).

I am still short of the lid  that comprises of parts 9, 10, and 11 along with part 7, the lid that screws onto the filter box.

I also am short of No's 5, 19, 20, 21 and 22 from the filter box itself.

All the Numbers come from the CMSNL list.

I know it's a big ask, but if you could have a look in your spares boxes. I would willingly pay for any items you have.

Many thanks

CB500/550 / Cylinder head
« on: September 05, 2019, 11:31:00 AM »
I have seen two methods of tightening the cylinder head.

1/ Tighten to 16ftlb, leave 24 hrs, retighten to 16ftlb leave 24hrs, lastly check and tighten to 16ftlb.

2/ Tighten to 14ftlb leave 24 hrs, tighten to 15ftlb leave 24 hrs, finally tighten to 16ftlb

Which, if either, is correct. TIA

CB500/550 / Piston rings
« on: September 02, 2019, 05:10:53 PM »
I was given a set of David Silver piston rings comprising of a chrome one, a black one and the set of 3 for the oil control ring.

What ring goes at the top? I have sussed out the 'R' on the top surface of the rings denoting "This side up"

Not sure which way round the top 2 go. Currently have the black ring second one down the chrome one at the top.

Just waiting for a cam chain tensioner to arrive before I slot it all together, so thought I'd double check.

Cheers

CB500/550 / 550F2 oil seals
« on: August 07, 2019, 07:43:10 PM »
When I bought the CB550F2 I got a full set of gaskets and a set of oil seals for the engine.

After spending the best part of a week flushing out the oilways in the crankcase halves and the head then air blowing them out and once again flushing out with paraffin in a blowgun and finally a blow through and a dry.

Today I started the rebuild. I replaced all the bottom crank main shells. Before I put the crank back in, I broke open the pack of oil seals. I could find 2 that fitted the crank, but the alternator end didn't have the lip on, to fit in the groove in the crankcase and the one I took off the points end had a metal band on the inside, the new one didn't. They both had a circular spring, that kept the seal in close contact with the crank.

I would really like to replace like with like. Who has a supplier that will supply the correct seals. David Silver springs to mind, but other suppliers may also have them. Rebuild on hold before I really started.  Cheers  Bill W.
