Title: CB550 Frame down tubes
Post by: Sesman on January 14, 2021, 10:40:52 PM
I’ve just begun a cb550 restoration and started a detailed inspection and record picture session. I have query regarding the down tubes particularly in the area of the male/female socket junction point.

My query is, is it normal to have some flattening of the tubes at this location and just below on the lateral side of the down tube. It seems fairly symmetrical on both tubes!

Any contributions would be gratefully received. Apologies in advance for the photos.

Regards

I didn't notice that on mine, I think its too close to the exhaust to have been caused by crash bar clamps but maybe there was a set hat had a weird fixing system

Thanks heli_madken.

I’ve spoken directly to their owners and get the impression it’s quite common to witness depressions in the downtubes in this area. I’m not clear if these might be present at factory or occur harmlessly due to crash bars being fitted. In any event the wheels line up and the head stock is straight with no sign of stress or fracture. Perhaps I’m worrying about nothing. Or at least very little.

Thanks again

Has a sidecar ever been fitted?

Hi, Tomb.

I really wouldn’t know. Some sources suggest all 550 down tubes have a perceptible flattening at the headstock/downtube junction socket. I guess I’m totally reliant on the opinions and observations of other 550 owners. Perhaps they all came out of the factory like this Sir....ahem.

Using a crude straight edge, headstock cones/rod and builders level, everything  seems to line up with reasonable accuracy. I guess I may be worried about nothing, unless somebody says different.

Thanks.
