CB500/550 / CB550 K3 Airbox Fittings
« on: January 21, 2024, 05:51:45 PM »
I am very close to having all the bits I need to rebuild my airbox apart from the parts identified as Stay A and Stay B (threaded brackets for the airbox top).   I have one of them but I don't know if its A or B, is there a way to identify it specifically ?

CB500/550 / Where does this bit go?
« on: January 18, 2021, 11:31:10 AM »
The nightmare after Christmas.

Back to the K3 build now its warm enough to go back in the garage.  Assembled the clutch and along with the clutch components is a spacer 25mm ID, 4mm wide, 1.4mm thick.   I assumed this sat on the clutch shaft but doing a dry build it obviously doesn't.

Had a quick look in the parts book and the only spacer I can see that looks anything similar is 28112-323-000 spacer 25mm on the primary shaft.   I have no reason to believe it has been missed out of the engine build but any other possible location suggestions very welcome.

CB500/550 / Valve Timing/Clearance setting
« on: December 19, 2020, 10:50:52 AM »
Morning All, following all the instructions to set valve clearances  but no matter how many times I rotate the crankshaft I can not get
No 1 Piston at TDC and T 1-4 timing mark to coincide, T 2-3 is always at the top?

Flummoxed, any advice gratefully received as ever.

CB500/550 / Camshaft Refit
« on: December 01, 2020, 01:27:45 PM »
Hi guys, looking for salvation after a morning of despair.

CB550 engine build going steady, latest activity replacement of camshaft, primary chain seems very tight and after a struggle to align everything and fit it to the sprocket it is so tight I cant get the sprocket to seat on the camshaft.

Any thoughts experience more than welcome.

UPDATE:   Searched the forum and found a similar post.   Backed off the tensioner and with a bit of very gentle persuasion everything is now on and aligned albeit very tight.   If I now release the cam chain tensioner the centre screw is positioned with the slot vertical and will turn around 30 degrees before springing back.   Does this seem right?

CB500/550 / Cylinder barrel seating
« on: November 18, 2020, 12:22:33 PM »
Really simple question guys.

Just refitted the cylinder barrel to my K3, new gaskets and O rings. However its sitting proud of the crankcase by a very small gap (1mm or so).   Do I assume this will close up when I bolt the head down?

Thanks.

CB500/550 / Rear Wheel (Doh!!!)
« on: June 04, 2020, 08:22:27 PM »
Evening all

The original rear wheel for my 550 K3 was in a fairly shabby condition so I decided the most economical option was to purchase a used rear wheel in very good condition with excellent chrome sold as a CB550 73 - 77.   However, now I have come to assemble, the rear brake plate fouls the circumference of the rear brake drum where previously it sat just inside the drum.   Comparing the wheels side by side (should have done it sooner) the cooling fin pattern is different.   Has anyone experienced this before?   I am not sure now what the wheel is from.   I guess the easiest solution would be a different brake plate but again not sure which model would be compatible.   Any advice gratefully received.

CB500/550 / CB550 Main Bearings (again sorry)
« on: May 17, 2020, 04:24:31 PM »
Hi Guys, hope everyone is well and sane.  Apologies but its the main bearing issue again on my CB550 K3.

The cases are stamped CCBBB.

The only markings I can see on the crank look like Number 1, Capital letter A on each web.

Does the coding signify that I should have Brown, Brown, Green, Green, Green ?

I have five loose bearing halves and five still fitted in the upper crankcase half.   I have tried measuring the bearing thickness of the loose shells with a micrometer at each corner and they seem to vary between 1.44 and 1.54 mm but not sure if this dimension is relevant.   there is no sign of any colour coding on the shells.   They are all stamped DEL-A STD.

Any advice gratefully received.

CB500/550 / Fitting Taper Rollers to K3
« on: March 30, 2020, 04:13:45 PM »
Afternoon Guys, well lockdown has finally accelerated the rebuild of my K3.  I have installed a set of Pyramid Parts Taper Rollers, the lower one I have put the thick shim, the dust seal and the bearing in that order.   The race is fully seated in the headstock but when offered up the bottom yoke is held so far off that the steering stops don't contact.   Any tips or experience?

CB500/550 / Main Bearing Shells
« on: March 17, 2017, 04:27:24 PM »
I have a 550 K3 engine for rebuild.   I have all the original shells, one crankcase half has them in place the others are loose. They all look in good shape but there doesn't appear to be any code on the cases.   Any tips for sorting this out please?
