CB750 / Hiya, I'm hopping over from the 550 forum
« on: September 24, 2009, 06:15:54 PM »

Well, having hung around in a dark corner of the 550 forum, I'm coming in to see what you 750 lot are up to.

Despite selling my old 550 bobber (some on here may remember it), and declaring I was taking time out from building bikes... I now want to do another project. This time I fancy a very minimalist cafe racer.

So, if anyone sees a decent 70's 750 going for a song over the winter, as long as it's a runner, do point the seller my way :)

Cheers all, and here's to another build

Just chatted with a mate who's a bit handy in the tuning of cars - specialist in GT40 builds & tuning for racing I believe.

He's got handy bag of tricks to read the cylinder exhaust temp's by lasering the headers. Also just got a new lamda kit that reads the exhaust emmisions to help tweak the mix.

I'm going to have to take a spin up to his place one weekend soon so I can get this properly tweaked, and then look at understanding the whole flat spot and rev range issue that pods and an open pipe seems to raise.

Cheers Steve

Thought I'd read something along the lines of that cab balance/pulse issue before so that makes a lot of sense. It's the first time I've touched a carb so I wouldn't be surprised if my attempt at balancing didn't quite work perfectly! Off to buy a carb tune I guess.

I'm going to trop the bowl and check the lines today to see where the fuel's stopped at - confusing thing is that it's got fuel in the other 3 so I'm guessing it's a blockage in the carb itseld rather than the line.

Hi guys

Well, I appear to have made one or two errors somehere... my fettling was going so well for a while there!

I popped to top of the motor a couple of weeks back & replaced the gaskets and oil rings there - hoping to seal up the slowly increasing leaks from the rocker cover. She's certainly feeling like there's greater compression now

Following that I removed the carbs (leaking a little, and very grotty) and used the servicig kits from David Silver to replace all the inner parts and gaskets - the bike was running on some very old and flat gaskets all round! Glad to say that the carbs don't leak or overflow now. I also used the drill bit method to re-sync the carbs as they were a little out.

However, now we come to the issues.

1. Number 1 cylinder only starts to fire up after the engine warms a little (the motor sounds like it;s combusing much better following a clean though as there's a more rounded note to the ignition)
2. Number 4 carb now has no fuel running to it - all the others fill fine
2. There's a nasty knocking sound from inside the motor when it's on a very low idle (never there before) - this disappears the moment the clutch lever's is pulled in.

Any ideas on what daft mistakes I've made guys?

Cheers

Gav

Hi mate

Sorry, don't know of any specificly biker centric pubs around there. Millions of nice country pubs on the backroads though - I ride around that part of the world from time-to-time - and I've never failed to receive a warm welcome and a tea on request.

I know what you mean about the oakdene gravel pit - should try pulling out of there on my 1400, it just spins up and throws rocks at everyone   :D

Didn't think to look for other models! DOH!

Did you get that list of links to biker cafe's that I left you?

CB500/550 / Gearshift rubber needed
« on: January 19, 2008, 08:12:21 AM »

Hi guys

I've checked David Silver and I seem to need the one part they don't stock - the little rubber boot for a new gearshift lever.

Anyone know a place that might sell one?

Cheers

CB500/550 / Re: Sump Removal
« on: January 15, 2008, 10:03:18 PM »

Hi mate

easiest job going. Once the oil's drained (idle the bike for a short spell to warm the oil first), you can drop the sump straight out and the filter's easy to reach (right where the sump was)

Hi Steve

Depends on what you're after really. I'll have to go down the garage and see what's really there as I wouldn't pass junk parts on. From memory there's some parts from the original bike pre-chop down (although I slung some very manky bits), then there's the engine in parts and a second front baraking setup I bought (but i want to use that to convert to twin discs and reduce my stopping distance under the mile!).

I'm any easy going type so when it comes to bike bits cash is fine, but I'm always just as happy with a fair exchange of parts or work. I run a modern Suzuki and myself and a few of the owners club use that as a bit of an exchange system   :D

Hi all

When I picked up my 550 I also got 90% of a spare engine. I've used the gearbox to rebuild my main unit but I've got various bits leftover, including some mucky by usable pistons, casings, head, cylinder block (rusty bores), cranks etc. It's a basket case as it's been broken down but it's there.

I'm likely going to keep a few handy parts, but if anyone needs casings, a head to polish, etc. Feel free to drop me a line. If I can help out then I will.
