Nice bit of lateral thinking, well done. Did they make them in a range of colours?????

CB350/400 / Steering lock renewal.
« on: March 15, 2024, 04:22:22 PM »
Well here we are, halfway through March, so, the 400 was re-introduced to the wonders of daylight. Last use was late November. After checks on tyres/chain/battery etc., the petrol was turned on and left for about 2 minutes, no drips, OH JOY!.  I had not kept the battery on charge at all, so, seeking forgiveness for all my past sins, it was ignition on and press the starter. Engine turned over about three or four times, and it only bleedin'  started eh?  Couple of trips round the block then back into garage to change oil and filter.  Last time I rode it I had absent mindedly left a key in the steering lock, bad idea.  So,as everything had gone well so far today that I dug out the new replacement I had bought earlier this year.  My bottomless gratitude to all the people who have contributed to this forum on the subject of lock replacement, I wish you had warned me that I needed the Oxford Concise Dictionary of mechanical obscenities!! But I got there eventually. Thanks everybody, have a great weekend.  Mike.

CB350/400 / Re: 400 Exhausts.
« on: March 01, 2024, 11:09:51 PM »
The silencer supplied by DSS look good but didn't fit that well.

It sits too high and too near the bike such that it fouls the rear wheel spindle nut.  Packing can get it better, but still not quite right.
Just a random thought. Have you got the correct length rear shockers?  I made this mistake some time ago, and that was with the original factory fitted exhaust system.

As with all parts, Honda didn't make them Dave, so we think it was a sign from the brake manufacturer that the item has been tested 🤔🤔🤔🤔
The manufacturer was short sighted, and instead of Honda, he thought it said Hindu.

CB350/400 / Re: Allen or hex head bolts?
« on: February 22, 2024, 06:14:36 PM »
If you are in a position to be able to use good quality sockets and spanners, I would be tempted to stay with the hex headed bolts.  Where socket head type fixings became popular was in replacing the Phillips type screws on engine side casings, much of this was before we discovered the existence of JIS tools!!  On a purely personal note, I don't particularly like the appearance of of full socket head screws on these casings, I think it gives a look similar to a piece of Military equipment. I have used button headed socket screws on these cases, the head shape being not too far removed from the original. Just a personal opinikon, and no criticism intended.

CB350/400 / Re: Done any touring on the 400?
« on: February 05, 2024, 08:58:42 AM »
This is purely a personal opinion, but if you consider your bike to be in very good mechanical and safe  condition, then there is no reason not to use it for touring.  One of my main criteria when riding anywhere is to avoid motorways and similar like the plague. These bikes were more than capable in their heyday, but nowadays we are outgunned by virtually any type of family car being driven by someone who has NOT been taught to drive, only how to pass their test. Plus of course, where is the enjoyment of just riding a motorcycle in a straight line?  I don't do the mileage that I used to years ago, but a couple of times a year I visit a lifelong fellow rider which involves a 140 mile ride from Suffolk to Sussex.  No sat-nav, so it's a case of using a map and plotting a route using minor A and B roads all the way. (Apart from the Dartford crossing!). The following few days are spent touring Kent and Sussex using back roads which is totally what these bikes were made for.  I normally(sic) keep my rev limit to about 7-8.000, but in general I cruise at about 60-65MPH and enjoy the ride and the scenery.  Regarding carrying luggage, the kit that is available nowadays is beyond belief, and bear in mind that the bike was designed to be capable of carrying a pillion passenger, so if you are riding solo, weight of luggage should not be a problem. Spare spark plugs, points and condensers,  clutch cable, fuses, and a good breakdown recovery membership card.  I have listened to many people who have told great stories of riding the length of France without using the Autoroutes. Go and enjoy yourself. Regards, Mike.

If you use a good brand of aerosol Satin Black it gives a half decent finish.

CB350/400 / Re: This piston must need replaced?

Actually if you can lock the front with a single disc, (which I know you can), it begs the question the benefit of fitting a double disc setup, or am I missing the point?
I’ll get me coat!🫣🫣

Cos twin discs look ‘the shizzle’ and balance the front end a bit in terms of looks IMO. Plus it’s more bling to dazzle the chicks outside the all girls school bus stop when you rumble by looking all macho Interesting image Roo, but in my REAL world, as I pass the girl's school, adorned in my XXL wax jacket and a pair of leather jeans that were too small 10 years ago, I don't think that even a second disc is going to improve my chances. Unless of course the latest fashion includes the grey Gaffa tape holding my left boot together!  Stay safe and upright everybody.
Each to their own. I disconnected the abs on the VFR for a while a few years back and the brakes were no where near as good but like I say, each to their own and soon rigged it all back up again and to be fair, EBC discs, carbon Lorraine sintered pads, braided lines and better levers, they bloody should be

Y'know, if you want/need gut wrenching brakes with ABS, allied to super grippy fat tyres, then why on earth do you want a vintage bike?

Dave, this is what the DID rims look like. Purchased from Silvers in 2020.

If my memory serves me correctly, the French Citroen team just did not like being beaten, especially in their own back yard by a group of humble{sic) British Minis.  The amazing part being, that all French registered vehicles at that time had to be equipped with yellow headlights. I leave you to guess what colour lights the Citroens were fitted with!!!!

I replaced every bulb on my 400 with LED's from Clasiccarleds. They even do a nice little digital flasher unit so you can run led's in the indicators, or even a mix. The flash rate stays the same. The digital flasher unit is about the same size as a normal relay and slips into the original rubber mounting quite nicely. Just as a matter of interest, the blue main beam warning light I put back to a filament bulb, as when riding along an unlit country road  in the dark on main beam it's a bit on the bright side and shining straight up at your face. As I think you mentioned elsewhere, do NOT use white led's behind coloured lenses, only use coloured bulbs. I think the icing on the cake was using the green led's in the speedo/rev counter, NICE!!

would be interested to know how to remove a dent in a front pipe, as to the best of my knowledge they were double skinned. Well done Ted for re-homing them!
