Title: Bottom yoke

Houston I have a problem. :'(

Having assembled my beautifully prepared front end, I think my bottom yoke has a slight twist in the vertical. Basically, with the top yoke in the straight ahead position the right fork leg is kicked forward by about 5mm...possibly more. I know, I know, I should have dry built and checked before moving on.

Do I press on, install the wheels and take it from there or is there a quick and simple way to allay my fears.

My skills, equipment and knowledge are best described as ‘crow-mag on’.

Slipped in with little resistance..oh err.

Just occurred to me to run as flat edge between the underside of both table clamps. There is daylight.

It’s deffo twisted slightly clockwise when viewed fro the rhs...if you see what I mean?.

Know anybody with along bar and blow torch..bugger.

The original was supplied DK. I’ll give them a call.

Trigger. Just for info, the stem looks good on mine. The daylight in the second photo is the relative gap having placed a flat edge on the opposite stanchion clamp. Do I have a chance of twisting it back....maybe. Or is it scrap value only?

As you predicted. Back to David silver, these bearings are certainly no use as direct replacements.

As you identified in your earlier mail link, If I lower the bottom bearing height by reducing the supplied shim depth to achieve the correct headlamp bracket fit, the bottom yoke would foul the steering stop plate. How very disappointing. Still, with decent headlamp ears in short supply, should we care.....I do.

I suspect though that demand is too low drive a proprietary solution.

With the 1mm shim i fitted yoke did not foul and brackets were fine.
And if you insist on straightening that yoke a long bar of the correct size to clamp in tightand do it cold as its cast stee

Ted was kind enough to send me a 1mm shim. Now to set about removing the bottom bearing and shim without ruining the bearing...great. Jury is out on the bottom yoke ‘djustment’ until I’ve spoken to DK.

The inner brg is usualy not that tight on the stem mate

And a length of scaffold pole ;D Imaginative use of the council drain cover (almost a slip gauge fit for the Stanchion clamp) may be be the solution. Waiting for night fall..... ;). A Norton commando stanchion is the perfect tool.....sacrilege I know.

Update. The CB550 1977 F2 needs a 3mm shim to safely clear the lock stops and bottom yoke. Unfortunately this means the headlamp brackets don’t fit correctly. Just to further reinforce Triggers observations, to make them fit correctly shim the bottom bearing and mill out 6mm from the head stock for the top bearing.

I’m going back to all bearings.... ;D
