Post by: Green1 on August 09, 2015, 08:36:48 PM
Are starter solenoids repairable mine seems to have stopped working?

Possibly, but they're not expensive to buy, pattern ones (Sorry Bitsa!) are less than a tenner, and you could mess with your old one all day, and it might not hold together again!

Not worth the hassle as you can get a new one for under a tenner >> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/solonoid-solenoid-Starter-Relay-Honda-CB550-1974-1980-/161187088927?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25877fca1f

Fit these for years and never had a problem yet

That's what I thought I looked at that one but couldn't bring myself to buy it without hearing Don't Touch Pattern Parts.  ;D

Most pattern parts are put in OEM bags and boxes these days  ;D ;D

That is very true it also goes the other way with genuine parts in pattern boxes.
My brother used to work for a well known now defunct car parts place it wasn't unusual to find Bosch coil packs in after market boxes.

Usually the high current contacts get damaged by arcing or the moving contact piece jams. Pretty easy to service, half an hour and a flat file is all you need. Take the contact end off, remove the nuts on the studs and push the contact studs out. File the flat. File the moving piece flat. Clean out any crud, reassemble. I can't exactly describe the process but it once you open it up it will be easy to see what you need to do.
If the coil bit is jammed, it's toast. This is not really repairable.

Thanks Dave I'll look at it when I find the time  ::)
I bought the one listed above as a temp fix and it looks a bit to Chinese for my liking.
