Had a Gel battery delivered that had been dropped and has a hole in the top. The question is: can this battery be used ?
Nothing is leaking out of it and it is taking a charge. Just not sure what is inside these things.

I wouldn't trust the fumes from it the will try to corrode everything.

It is a freebee as it will cost more to send back than what it is worth. Was thinking of filling the hole up with silicone but, not really sure what is inside as never cut one up before.

yes it can be melted but, don't know how dangerous it will be.

What are you planning to melt it with a blow torch. ;D

There is a product called Petro Patch which as well as fixing leaky fuel tanks claims to be good for repairing battery cases as well, probably worth a try?

DO NOT use any heat what so ever near a battery IT WILL EXPLODE the fumes are very inflammable , if you are that desperate crack on
fill it with whatever you like, don't forget its sulphuric acid now not distilled water lol
but I have been on a bike when the battery has exploded it was so loud I thought I had blown a tyre ,didn't find the fault till weeks later. blew the side off the battery it can get very messy and you wont see the corrosion until its too late

I solder banks sub c batteries together to repair cordless drill batteries they haven't exploded yet. They can get hot if you try to rush it though

I do that too. those cordless batteries are bloody pricey.

Don't know how gelatinous the electrolyte is but how about a piece of perspex plate cemented down with some silicon mastic?

I'd use Sticks Like Sh*t. It bonds far better than silicon.

.... reading all the above Trig, & in light it's a freebie I'd bin it & move on.
Too many times in my life I've 'made things do' only for it to come back & bite me on the arse....it's a bike; they fall over, have spills (!!!!) .... you don't need a leaky battery adding to your woes.

Why ? Do you want to buy it Mick ;D Glued the hole with a hot glue gun and is sound.

No leaks and fitted to my K6 with a old motad ;D ;D ;D

I would bin it personally. Batteries are cheap enough
