CB350/400 / Re: Throttle cables
« on: May 26, 2017, 08:36:55 PM »
Hello in the Netherlands.
I was wondering about this and recall that there have been a few threads on this subject of late so I popped the search ' throttle cable ' in the search box,  there is some good info on this recently. Ok it's not specifically for the 400 four; but I'm pretty sure the principal is the same.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Rob, booked at the Ballamoar campsite online, see you in the Raven for a pint or two! Look for a Candy Blue Green CB750 K1 on site, will you be on the bike in your avatar?

as we are all going to the IOM Classic,we will have to arrange a meet !!

MrD: Yes I'll be on that bike, between 22 and 26 August, and YES drinks are in order.

John: A SOHC.co meet up will be required just as you suggest, but as paulbaker1954 has discovered we all seem to be afraid of commitment, so I think any meet up is best planned no more than a week ahead  :D.  Count me in though.

Did you have the advancer dissassembled and then assembled the cam 180o out? Check the pic and if the little carve in the rim faces the hole (both encircled white).

Smack on the money. Thanks too to Mike and Zed. Sorted.  Just need some nice weather now; not for the bike you understand but I've got 240L of mulch to spread on the garden.

Could you not just insure it as a 500, who would know its now a 600?

Just fired up the F1 and am considering a European trip.

Does anyone know which racks are suitable or easily adapted to suit?

Hi, I like this style of rack

Just buy new L brackets which are bike specific, and match the rest off eBay, this makes it much cheaper.

Can anyone advise about camping at the Manx G

Walking distance of a pub would be handy, my days of riding round the IOM half cut are over, I hope.  8)

Try

One of the best campsites I have ever stayed at, and I've been to France! Full facilities brilliant

See youse there. Trackside pub just 2 mins walk.

Ah!! I had no idea that it was possible to remove the cam from the auto advance unit, if this is possible I should be able to alter is position by 180 degrees and in that case even if Mickwinf's observation about cam timing is right I should be able to correct it with the auto advance cam.  Fingers crossed.

I can't get in the garage now cos apparently I have to go to the garden centre, as there is an "unmissable" offer on mulch.  But I will report back ASAP. (on the bike not the mulch).

Thanks Rob

CB500/550 / CB500 Ignition Timing Puzzle with added YouTube video
« on: March 18, 2017, 12:58:56 PM »
Hi all I have just put the engine back in my bike after a major and excellent overhaul.

The first start up was a bit of a faff, before I pressed the starter I checked for spark and put in new fuel, at first all it would do is spit and fart occasionally.  In the end I decided to check the timing and this is where the puzzle is, It is 180 degrees out, which I think is impossible, so I swapped the yellow and blue wires over where they connect near the battery and hey presto it runs perfectly.

I have put a vid on YouTube that shows whats going on; watch it here and sorry about the sound quality:

https://youtu.be/zJ2kpJkyeoM

Back in October when I took the motor out I decided not to disturb the electrics and they all remain as they were.  Apart from the electrics behind the left hand side panel where cleaned up the contacts.

Any ideas why the points open and cylinders 1 & 4 spark when the timing marks in the auto advance unit are at the 'F' mark for 2 & 3.

Thanks for looking

Phil,

You probably already know this, but just in case you don't there are free GPS speedo apps for your phone.  Mine even has a trip computer included and is very customise-able

Good morning.

Try Footman James 'laid up cover' They say this:

'This valuable cover applies whilst your vehicle, its accessories and its spare parts are kept in a locked garage/building. Your classic motorcycle is also covered while it is temporarily out of the garage if you are exhibiting it, or having it repaired, in the UK (including while it is transported by trailer to and from the exhibition or repairers premises). Agreed Value option available on Laid Up policies'

Other providers are available

HI,

I thought that these may be of some use.  Sadly though the one pictured is a so called DELUXE version without the kickstart.

Canal find?? nah

"been in a dry barn"

I can see what's likely to have happened;
It's supposed to say 'stored NEAR a dry barn'. An easy mistake to make with all this auto tie pin and spell chequers.
