Please excuse me for crashing your thread, but on a slightly related subject I am looking for a set of four standard down pipes for a CB500/4.  By downpipes I mean the exhaust minus the silencers. If a full set is asking too much the one for cylinder four (outside right) would be very acceptable.

What happened to the float? looks to be only half there. I found one in an old tin earlier this week if it's any use, along with a complete slide, needle and arm. No idea why they were there.

The float was seized and broken when I was given the carbs, which is why they have sat around for so long, if I ever get to the position where I know how they work and want to reassemble them I may well take up your offer, but for their own safety your spares are probably best with you.  After all who knows what the Aliens are capable of once they know I am figuring out their technology. 😊

By the way there are two short perforated tubes that I think the parts list refer to as jets, are these also known as emulsion tubes, if not where is the emulsion tube (s)? Or is it that the emulsion tube is part of the jet.

Cheers Rob

Ok I'm on it, I had an old carb in the loft and I was wondering how they worked and prompted by the threads on the forum about the subject I thought that I would find out and share it here.

My initial examination has forced me to consider the existence of life on other planets, because what sort of mind is capable of coming up with all the little passageways and the like, let alone manufacture it, let alone do all of it in the 1960's.  I'll tell you how; its Alien technology FACT.

Another example is the Deltic engine.  look at this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NdbonKRyKY

If you listen carefully you can tell its the Aliens because they synthesised the voice from a sat nav.

Anyway, Aliens or not and unless someone beats me to it I propose to figure out what is going on with these carburetors and will share my findings.

Here is part 1 'Dismantlement':

Jon,

Depending on your budget and the style that you are after, my money goes on the Ventura System the one designed for the CB550 is still available and fits the CB500.  I bought the L brackets new from Ventura and the rest from ebay.  Its great and versatile stuff and easily demountable

hi,

For correct parts and assembly use this link:

http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb550k3-four-england_model14671/partslist/F09.html#results

The clearance between disc outer face and fork leg inner should be about 5mm. I couldn't measure mine accurately and its on a CB500K but I'm pretty sure its the same as the parts are mostly interchangeable.

Good  luck with it

Hi Donk,

Have you got down pipes for a CB500 K? if so I'm interested if they are in nice nick.

Have look at this thread if you've not already seen it.

Looking at the Classic Bike Shop site I'm guessing that you've used the Bonneville silencers and cobbled up some bracketry  ?   (Beats spending 800 odd quid for iffy replacements).  And they don't look out of place.
PS Like that number plate !!

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback, I think they look better than the originals; no nasty welding seam at the top.

I used two of these:        http://www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/tulip-u-s-custom-mufflers.html

Two of these:                  http://www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/tulip-u-s-customs-36mm-44mm.html

And four of these:           http://www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/1-3-4-44mm-exhaust-kick-up.html

The owner of the shop (Mike I think his name was) gave me a nice discount and even got four reducing sleeves made so that they fitted onto the standard down pipes.

Here is a picture of the baffles I made for each pipe:

Now I know they are a bit crude, and I'm a bit embarrassed to post them on this site cos' I reckon there are some sh*t hot engineers on here, so please forgive me.

They were still too noisy so I have put in extra baffle a bit like the principal of a Supertrapp silencer and reduced the outlet area to something more like the standard 285mm2 pr cylinder. Its also now got some acoustic packing in the perforated tube.

It runs and sounds great with nice straw coloured plugs, the only thing it doesn't like is slow speeds on a constant and small throttle opening, when it 'eight strokes' and just wont behave.

Now about that number plate: You too can have a personalised number plate just like me .......  get Photoshop. Yep its a cheat  :)

Cheers

Oh dear Rib, what a pain. Are you sure it wasn't that dodgy speedo cable playing up ? ;) ;) ;)

Ah Yes that would explain it, and I wasn't the last to touch that was I.

Cheers

Wired up as Bryanj laid out, starts, revs and ticks over just fine.  Take it out on the road and I find I'm back to square one where I've got no pulling power.  (The bike not me...... that sound's conceited).
My next step is to try to borrow a strobe and check the timing.

Hi,

I was on my way home from Horncastle to Cheshire last night at about half eleven on my CB500, going like a good'un over the 'Cat and Fiddle' no traffic eerie mist in my headlight beam, wonderful!  Then all of a sudden a little misfire then a big misfire; bloody brilliant !  Any how I stopped; the bike ticked over perfect, revved freely on the stand, so I tried to set off again. No way would it behave under load.  I took off the points cover and the cylinder one and four points were a festival of sparks (lucky it was dark). Fortunately I always carry a set of points and condensers amongst other useful things, I banged on a new condenser and hey presto we are off again running great.

So I recommend you try new condensers especially as there may have been shall we say some 'unusual wiring' in the recent past.  By the way the one that packed up on me was about 6 months and 2000 miles old it was made by Daiichi, but it was cheap so its not all bad news.

PS I don't use a strobe to set my timing I Just do it by the Haynes Manual method. Seems to work.

Good luck,

Rob

PS. how are the new screw drivers ?

Afternoon,

Yes they look too low, they are going to ground. I reckon that  it's going to be far too much hassle to make them work.  Best bet is to follow the advice of Chris400f and buy a set of standard four into four down pipes to use as a basis. You can sell your four into one setup to offset the cost.

Go for it.

« on: September 07, 2016, 02:50:13 PM »
Charlie,

The fact that you asked the members for their thoughts on the subject is I suspect pretty strong evidence that your heart is telling you to keep it.
Always follow your heart in matters of Motorcycles would be my advice.  Heads are boring and make us do things like buying cars and join the National Trust cos' it has great deals on short bread and whale music (Ho ho).

A couple of years ago I decided that I had to get rid of one of my bikes, the modern one or the CB500.  I decided to sell the CB500, so began to prepare it for sale.  After about 10 minutes working on it I realised that there was no way on earth I was ever going to sell it; not after 31 years.  Nothing else in my life has lasted 31 years and I know every nut and bolt of my bike.  So if you can afford to lay it up  lay it up and have a good trip.

If however you decide you have to sell, let me know and I'll bust it for spares ................................................... JOKE everyone just a JOKE!

HI,

It's a pound to a penny bet that your collector is going to exit on the right hand side of your bike.  I think it is going to be really difficult to adapt the collector so that it can accommodate a 4 into 2 system.  However, having looked at the collector it seems to have a wide and roughly symmetrical layout for receiving the 'down pipes', so for what its worth here is my suggestion; Don't bother with the collector and cobble up something using your set of 'downpipes' and off the self parts, I have added a photograph of what I managed to make at home using my own 'downpipes' and parts from:

http://www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/

It took quite a bit of head scratching but I'm happy with the result. Not Cheap though I spent about £225 on it.

here is my 500

the sad thing is I can't get the screws undone without drilling them out.  (Don't you just hate crosshead screws ?).  >:(
[/quote]

Ah, I think I know something about this.  If its on a Jap bike and looks like a crosshead screw, its not. It's a JIS screw (Japanese Industry Standard) they are a different shape and our western screwdrivers will gimp those heads.  You can identify a JIS screw as has a little dimple on the head.  JIS screwdrivers are available on the internet.

Good luck with your electrics, i'm watching with interest.

HI,

If there is no alternative you could try this, even though it is pretty vile to my eye at least.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Rear-Back-Luggage-Rack-Backrest-Back-Rest-/311673477674?hash=item48912fda2a:g:qCMAAOSwHoFXqyjk

The seller is D and K, they often have...shall we say unusual seats and things taken off their US imports.  What were Americans thinking of in the 70s and 80s !

This for example, imagine it on your otherwise standard bike as you cruise down to the coast on the A22  :)
