Other Bikes / Rear shock lengths

I have been looking for some rear shocks for my CB360, they seem to be offered in various lengths, 317mm - 335mm. Would it make much of a difference either way? The 317mm would be a good match for what’s come off the bike but I’ve been offered 335mm gratis from a friend.

Hoping for some thoughts from you who know about these bikes, I’m looking for something for my first project, does this look ok, original enough or a bit of a lost cause?

I’m in no rush to complete. I have a couple of other bikes to ride, so I can take my time and learn as I go.

CB750 / Fuel line lengths

I recently took the tank off to carry out some maintenance work and the fuel lines from the petcock were very short. The tank has two lines out, to the two fuel inlets on the carbs, one longer and one shorter, there’s not really much there to lift the tank easily remove the lines, I’m ready to put the tank back on and slightly longer fuel lines would make it much easier.

Is there a particular length these should be, would making them a bit longer be detrimental to the performance, I seem to recall reading somewhere that some fuel lines need to be an exact length?

I’ve tried searching but had no joy in finding any info, even being able to move the tank without having to remove it could be handy.

CB750 / Ignition timing question

Apologies for the basic questions that I’m posting.

Today was to be the day that I checked the points and set the ignition timing, for the first time. I hadn’t banked on the timing being so much of a pain!

The points are pretty much cooked and I will be ordering new ones but I cleaned them up for now, set the gaps and cracked on with the timing. This is where the fun started.

I could set the timing on 1-4 to light the bulb bang on the F mark.

If I then set the plate with one screw to check it, everything was fine, as soon as I tightened all three screws it would throw it out. This went on for about an hour, what I found was that if I tightened the top right screw on the plate at any point it went out of whack. If I tightened one of the other screws, or both of them, it was fine. As soon as the top right screw was tightened it advanced it.

Is there a knack that I don’t know about. Could the plate be dodgey, or any other issue that could cause this? I didn’t expect it to be such a pain.

I’m hoping some of you clever kids might be able to help a novice spannerer out?

I bought this bike a couple of months ago, with a view to get more hands on and really get to grips with my own maintenance and repairs, I’ve ridden on and off for most of the last 36 years since my first Honda XL125 as a teenager, what I never did was any meaningful maintenance or repairs, usually paying someone else to do it for me. I am happy with oil changes, brakes, cables etc, but engine work, carbs and the like are a mystery to me.

The bike hadn’t been a regular rider for a number of years since a restoration but had a wee run out every year to keep the juices flowing. So it was always going to need some TLC, only I was hoping to do that through the winter in my (hopefully) new workshop / shed I’m panning to build. The bike had a pronounced flat spot from take off and low revs, from throttle off to throttle on. I’m pretty convinced that it has got worse  but that could just be my imagination?

I have only managed to put a couple of hundred miles on the clock so far and today I decided to go for a bit of a blast, about 50 miles in total, with a good proportion of dual carriageway to blow away any cobwebs.

All was going well, when about 3 miles from home and now on smaller country roads, I noticed a noise. It was a bit faint to start with, almost like a wheel rubbing or something catching but only when the bike was moving and not stationary, however I convinced myself that it was more likely coming from inside the engine rather than from something outside. I nursed the bike back home, turned the engine off immediately and had a little panic to myself! I checked both wheels and they seem to be turning freely with no noise when raised off the ground with no play.

I have read plenty on here about how everything needs to be set up right or these bikes can sound very ropey. So I have adjusted the cam chain tensioner (not sure if that did anything as there was no discernible happening to indicate any change) and I also set the valve clearances, some of which were very tight. Tomorrow I will checks the points and static timing. I have no doubt the carbs will need attention too.

So, to the question in the title… after another question. Would it be possible that a combination of these things being incorrect could produce such a noise?

These are the plugs that I removed tonight, 1-4 from left to right. Any advice as to what they are telling me? Too rich? Big Trouble? Carb issues? Run away?

Worth noting that they aren’t all the same plug either, I presume a new matching set of the correct type would be in order.

I have a feeling that I will need to tackle the carbs, which is something that strikes the fear into me, I will need to purchase the appropriate necessities for that, as it is something WAY beyond my comfort zone! Would you recommend vacuum gauges or something like the Morgan carbtune pro?

Apologies for the waffle and the Tommy Tippee beginner questions but I guess I have to start somewhere and you kind souls seem just the type to help me on my way. Thanks in advance

Misc / Open / Workshop / Shed Size?

I am considering building a wooden shed / workshop to help facilitate my first minor restoration project and generally help with routine maintenance on the bikes I already have.

Ideally I’m looking to get some feedback on what size I would need to have a bike lift, room for a small bench, tools etc. I would like enough room to walk around the lift and have enough access on all sides to work without struggling for space.

Any real life experience would be helpful. I’m pretty lucky as my wife has given the go ahead, I have the choice of down the bottom of the garden, which would require a new hard standing installing, or I can put one on the exisiting patio.

On the patio, I would be able to go approx 16 x 8 max, would 12 x 8 give me enough? I’ve marked it out and it seems ok but real life experiences would be really helpful.

It only needs to be a space for one bike as I can cram them in the main garage but there isn’t enough space in there for the bikes and to carry out the work.

Ideally I would like 20 x 10 but I think that may well be overkill?

CB750 / Replacement seat for 750K0

Does anyone know of any current suppliers of a decent repro seat for a 750K0?

There are a couple that I have found, both with plastic bases, a metal would be preferred but would also be happy with a proven quality plastic.

The ones I’ve found so far are CMS and MonkyDax, does anyone have any experience of either?

CB750 / Centre Stand configuration

Ok, this is possibly going to be the dumbest questions that has been asked here and I have held off asking it whilst I tried to find out the answer but…

Can you get right sided centre stands?

Every bike that I have ever owned with one has operated from the left side but due to my current driveway and garage configuration I really could do with a centre stand that operates from the right side on my K7. I have to fit the bikes in, in a certain way to make the most of the limited space, the driveway has a decent incline, so the bike has to be backed in.

Does such a thing exist or would it be possible for someone with the necessary know how to modify an existing centre stand? If I could find a solution to this it would make my bike storage solution a lot easier and would involve less moving one to get to another.

CB750 / Is this master cylinder original or reproduction

Would anybody be able to tell me if this is genuine or perhaps original to the bike? I recently bought my old K7 back after a few years, the last owner had fitted an aftermarket master cylinder but the rubber bushing and retaining plate that sit underneath are missing, so there is a load of free play on the lever.

I messaged the guy and he said that he still had the one that he took off and has kindly posted it to me.

I’m hoping to confirm that it is original so I can go ahead and refurbish it and fit back on the bike, this one doesn’t have the retaining plate like I have seen on others, I am going to strip it down soon but if it’s an aftermarket part like the one on the bike now, it probably doesn’t make sense to refurb and fit this one.

CB750 / CB750K7 Rear Shocks

Hi all,

My first question here if anyone can help?

I have recently bought back my old CB750K7 and I would like to replace the rear shocks. I have read a few of the previous comments here and had settled on the TEC shocks as recommended by others. Unfortunately, I have spoken to them and they no longer supply these and won’t be stocking them again. A real shame as I’ve had lots of bits from them for my triumph and they have been excellent.

Does anyone have any recommendations for something currently available that they have been happy with?

New Member Introductions / Hello from a CB750K7 owner

Evening all, checking in from sunny Northamptonshire!

I’ve been dipping into the site for a week or so in preparation for my new arrival. My 1977 CB750K7, it’s the second time that I have owned this bike, I thought I was done with it but it had gotten under my skin and was lucky enough to be able to bring it home.

I wasn’t aware of this place first time around and I’m sure I will be dropping in regularly, there a few things (as always) that I need to do with the bike but all in all I’m already very happy with it as it stands.

I also have a modern Triumph Bonneville T120 Black but I missed what these motorcycles provide. I am by no means an expert with the spanners so will be doing lots of reading and learning.

Looking forward to finding my way round here, all the best
