Front guard I would think is regarded as part of the structure of yhe forks as it also braces so unless he's replaced that strength I would expect it to fail. Seperate issue is construction and use regs, again, as far as I am aware there should be a front gaurd and there is a minimum coverage area. I don't get the deliberate rat bike look. I don't have phots around I think but my cb550/4 was a true rat bike, mostly totally standard, run on sod all budgett, the missing side pannel was replaced by a cb350 one held on by a zip tie. Rear guard was a steel cheap custom item bits that got rusty were painted. That 750 is mostly just an unfinished bike.

A front mudguard is not necessary for an MOT I asked an examiner last week cos I like the look of my race rep without one, I do have a fork brace fitted though, that said on the k7 the offside mudguard mounts are on rubber grommets so I'm not sure it ever did much bracing, maybe it relies on the front axle and top clamps for rigidity.

In the way a front fork structure works, I could never see that the mudgaurd brace can contribute anything realistic to improve it. There was alot of stuff about in the 80's sold to "improve" things by using a brace when most of the fixings in the fork legs had any chance of taking a load path that could make a difference.

I've seen some when not fixed properly (that should be a MOT fail) that have caught on the tire and wrapped themselves round into the bracket and locked the wheel....virtually lethal then.
