Have done the rope trick before with a special lever tool on the old mini's.

That would hold the valve shut but i dont think you will get a tool to compress the springs and get the collets out

;) yes it does work but its so long ago i cant recall what bike i done it on , not as easy as it sounds, can get a bit a nightmare popping the collets back in, ok if you doing one or two valves, but not the full head it gets a bit of a headache patience is the answer really .

I have in the past done valve collets on a cb500 by pressing hard on the tops of the collett retainers with the open jaws of a adjustable spanner, in my own circumstances I was from lack of the right tools and the head was laid flat on a soft wooden bench. I have used the string down the plug or injector hole to stop engines turning over a fair few times, so I cannot see why the 2 should not be combined, I think I can go as far as saying that I have even used the string trick on a sohc Honda, though not one of the 4's.

More agro and frustration than its worth especialy when the collets disapear into the darkest dingiest part of your workspace, what makes you think you need stem seals anyway?
