Title: Exhaust systems
Post by: Andy1976 on June 25, 2009, 08:24:32 AM
Hi all,
I've a Motad 4-1 which I've put back on my F1 as the BSM system that I bought sat to low to the ground (Looked daft too).
I'm happy using the motad for now, but it sounds too quiet. Is there a louder system still available to buy or is there anything I can do to the motad to increase noise?

Andy

A couple of years ago my mate Jim Shea (still registered here but no longer an sohc owner) had the same problem. He called Motad and they suggested that he drill a circle of 1/4" holes in the back plate of the silencer. It did sound nicer after that (and interesting that Motad should suggest it!)

I don't think so. Can you send them again?

Ok.....keep an eye on your spam box, if you've got one....that's where my mails usually end up, for some reason.

Yes, Im in the same situation as you, it seems. My K7 has the ubiqitous (spelling?) Motad fitted, and like you I'm after a slightly more invigourating sound from the pipe! As I'm 'remodelling' my 750 a bit, I'm happy to deviate from the standard look of this already handsome machine Anyhow, this is my solution:

 ;D
I plan to mig up a short link pipe from the Motad 4-1 headers and mount this Arrow can high-level.
No doubt I'll post some pics as the project progresses. Not sure how my neighbours will react though ;)

Reagrds

Talking of neighbours.....my next door neighbour has an engineering firm & he's currently re-fabbing a lump of solid staniless steel & a piece of perforated stainless sheet into a 1976 tail end......photo's will follow ;D ;D ;D (if it comes off ....& doesn't come off ! ::) )

I've got the opposite problem. I have just ordered a new set of 4 into 4 baffleless megaphones from Swarbrick. These should sound rather nice methinks. However I will need to be able to get the bike through it's MOT so for one day a year I will need to make the exhausts capable of being quiet so as not to annoy the examiner.

Does anyone know If I will be able to make baffles that are capable of doing this? Or will I need to refit an old quiet 4 into 1 system just for the test?

cheers

Get an old Motad off eBay and use that.

Swarbricks are the loudest thing you've ever heard on a racetrack - let alone the road!

The noise level for these older bikes is down to the discretion of the MoT examiner. I used to get a Z1000 with a Vance @ Hines with very little baffle through as the guy liked the sound. If the system is not redicusly loud, the you may be OK

Seamus, they have changed the rules again. What the test book says now is that it must be as quiet as the standard exhaust in good condition so you need a tester you have know for years who trusts you to get away with anything else------ESPECIALY as VOSA now have the capability to sit just out of sight with a laptop and tell the instant he prints a ticket so they can knock on the door within minutes and ask to retest the bike themselves!!

Interesting point Bryan. First you must find a tester the remembers how loud a bike of that age was!! Not too many with original exhausts to compare against...
Always worth a chat with the tested before hand to see how they feel about the noise.
Cheers

Well as an unoficial asside my tester was told that if he would be pissed off by the bike going past his bedroom at 3am it should fail!

If his bedroom is on the 15th floor, then it could be pretty loud

personally I ended up switching to a quieter set of pipes just because the rackett was getting to be annoying, the bike could be heard at a record 6 miles on one occasion, never attractted comment at mot or from ye old bill despite previous owner being part of a group who visited rallys in convoy and were always getting stopped, mine was the only bike to never be examined or rider interrorgated, part of that is the sidecar effect though, plod seem to avoid even looking at old outfits, probably cos they have their own rules and are a bit of a minefield to figure out legally.
