CB750 / Relationship between Timing & tappets
« on: April 07, 2010, 11:08:09 AM »
Ok - I'm going to preface this with an embarrassment warning.  I'm not an engineer, I do my best, I get by, but a lot of the time it's luck.  I have '0' mechanical "instinct".

My CB750 F1, 33,000 miles runs like a 'clock'.....which is an unfortunate analogy, because it has developed a "tick", in the last few days or, more to the point a click.....click, click & a whirring sloosh ??? ::)

It sounds, as best I can tell "top end"....but it doesn't sound unduly 'tappety'.....& it is the click/ticking which has attracted my ear ( I mean lets face it, it's a pretty noisy engine even when "pefect") so the slooshing, may be normal "top end" noise.

The only thing I have done to what was an otherwise sweet running, non-ticking, bike, is add the Dyna S electronic ignition & time it to perfection with a strobe light.

The question is, if the timing was slightly out before the Dyna S was fitted & the tappets set to run on a slightly "out" timing, is the fitting of the perfectly adjusted ignition likely to have induced the tappets being 'out' ?

I have double checked the fitting of the Dyna S - nothing is "catching", it does speed up with engine revs but gets pretty much "lost" in the engine noise at higher revs, on the stand or rolling & is most obvious when at low revs, low speed or static.  It's there when the engine is warm or cold ? & doesn't seem to get better or worse.  Sometimes it seems imperceptible & then like a spanner in a tin can.

The bike is running with good power, carbs have just been set/balanced ( since the ticking started ) & touch wood nothing horrible has happened.

Any suggestions.......

CB750 / Bit boring - exhaust collars/collets, getting it right
« on: March 30, 2010, 02:30:18 PM »
I'm coming out of hibernation....& thinking about going back in, given the turn in the weather  ::)

Last week the urge took me to take off the Motad system from the F1 & put the original exhaust back on.  I made the incorrect assumption that the Motad would be rigged with the original exhaust collets.  It wasn't - as anyone with a Motad will know, they appear to come as part of their system.  The first "gremlin" I encountered was that there were no ring gaskets in place.  Now this probably shouldn't have been an issue, barring the escape of a bit of 'gas' - but.....it was, because one of the ends of the pipes, where they are bent over had split around about 75 % of the dia. of pipe #3  I think it was the stress of being stretched & not cushioned by a gasket as there are no signs of any corrosion.

Gremlin #'s 2 & 3 - get the Motad system off, offer up the "original" & discover (i) I now have no collets & (ii) the bracket on the Motad doesn't fit the OEM silencer :-[

So.....Motad back on - with some c/h port gaskets this time & start looking for an F1 exhaust bracket & some collets.  I found a NOS bracket on Ebay on a reasonable'ish BIN, so that's on its way, but the collars are proving a bit more difficult.  Silvers are 'out of stock' & the "proper" ones have a double shoulder, presumably to spread the weight of clamping the pipes in ?  My lads CB125 ones are the same length & dia. but they have a 'single' shoulder.  CMS.Nl appear to have them for not too much money - question is.......what is everbody else using ?? Is it a case of "making do" with single shouldered collars/collets or working & looking a bit harder to find some double shouldered ones ?

There are some 'used' ones on Ebay in the States.....fair looking condition & even with postage if they don't get too much interest, they may come at a reasonable price.   If there are better Uk sources though, I'd like to get them before the weekend ! ;)

Misc / Open / Hawkhurst in Kent....any members down that way ?
« on: August 29, 2009, 01:33:37 PM »
I should have asked before....but having a senior moment :-[ - do we have any members or any members with any bike interested mates in Hawkhurst, Kent ?

I have my eye on a bike but it's not particularly high value - small cc Honda twin - & I'm 160 miles away....am trying to find someone who might be able to take a look for me asap.....just cosmetic & "safety basics" before I risk taking the trip.

Asked on a couple of other forums but not having much luck.......must be too close to the Sea !!

CB750 / Side panel colour - 75-76 the Yellow ones...
« on: August 28, 2009, 08:33:38 AM »
Ok.....getting (more than) a bit 'anal' here.....&, it's probably of no consequence anyway as it's a 'get out & ride bike', but, the question of side panel colour on the 76 F1 is perplexing me?

Den, in 'my' tank post has shown his Candy Red bike with it's original grey covers.  Den, you've pointed to the "Phantom Grey NH-43" as the 'right' colour for the red bike.  Refs on the net suiggest that 43 is 'now' known as a black ?,......but that doesn't stop it being a grey in reality ;)

The 'On-line' Honda colour identifier states the side covers for the 'yellow' F1 should be "black"......no if's, not buts, just "black".  Honda CMSNL's headline photo shows a bike with silvery grey side panels.....& 99% of bikes you see about have either 'black'....or......yellow, same as the tank !

I have about 20 1976 MCN's many of which have colour photos of the original bike up to & "at launch" but the angle of the shot is always such that it's never quite clear whether it's black, or grey......it' certainly  not as 'silver' as the 'Dutch On-line' parts suppliers bike.

So.....can anybody catagorically confirm which it should be.

Two additional points.....(1) it's good to have so little to worry about in your life that such an issue is worth bothering about !! ::)
(2)......I happen to have some Mercedes "Anthracit" which is a dead ringer for Dens side covers colour left over from my lads Kreidler tank re-spray......they're fresh "black" at the moment......but now would be the time to make them 'grey' if I was going to.... ::)

CB750 / Sweaty palms - tanks transfers......
« on: July 15, 2009, 09:11:20 PM »
The replacement tank for my F1 is all painted up ready for the application of the lines.  I've bought the blue vinyl lining from Sunrise Graphics.  I'm sure it's the 'northern' sense of humour, but I love the way my precious delivery came with an A3 sized slip saying it's nigh on impossible for a DIY'er to do !!  Pity I didn't know that before I outlayed the dosh !  Given that little bombshell, it would definately have been cheaper to have had it done commercially - especially if I cock it up !

I have measured the 'lines' across the widest part & they're about 19 & 1/2" wide. My reference for applying them are some 1976 "Motor Cycle" Mag's which have loads of large, colour Promo pics of the F1's when they came to the market.....but.....if anyone out there has an original tank, I'd be really grateful for an indication of the height of the straight, bottom line above the lower edge of the tank.....I appreciate it's "stepped"......but anything would help......& an idea of the distance of the rear blue corner, from the back of the tank, so I can try & mark up the points with masking tape.   A measurement from the front edge of the tank to the front 'blue' corner may be useful, but the big 'curve' will probably make that difficult to measure & mark up.

Tears before bed-time I reckon.............ham-fisted isn't in it !!! ::).....good job you can't see both sides at once :-[

CB750 / Why no fairings on the F1 ?
« on: June 28, 2009, 04:38:05 PM »
I've read, in a couple of places that Honda recommended that fairings should not be fitted to the F1.  I've even read that there would originally have been a 'transfer' to that effect on the bike. My mate has an F2 with a huge Polaris style "Windjammer" thing on it & I have seen them 'about' with Dunstall style race fairings, & others.

Is it 'science' ? or myth......or best not too ???, just interested from a style perspective.  I'd quite like to fit one really......but wouldn't want to "disrupt" the front end too much, or at all, if I could help it. :-\

CB750 / Final drive chain
« on: June 03, 2009, 08:57:53 PM »
Sorry to monopolise the q's & a's....but the bikes running well enough & getting some miles on her now.

I've got a very good 'local' chain / sprocket supplier, & as the chain on the bike is as cruddy as hell & I'm a bit 'critical' about chains & tyres, I decided to get a new socket set & chain.  I'm not sure the old ones have done that much.....just been horribly "greased".

I rang up & they were a bit cautious about supplying an 'O' ring chain.  The 'man' thought it might be a bit heavy for the clearances in the sprocket 'case' at the front end - mainly due to width.

He advised me to pop over & see him to pick up the sprockets & let him weigh up the 'width' to see if an 'O'  ring would fit.

When I turned up he pointed out that underneath the grease........was an 'O' ring chain....so it would inevitably fit.  Chain duly supplied, so far, so good.

Tonight as a prelim to an intended fit tomorrow, I've removed the sprocket cover just to make sure there will be no 'gremlins' tomorrow when I propose to fit it.  On removing the small case which covers the sprocket, I found that there was fairly substantial "chaffing" to the triangular rubber/plastic cover which protects the top alloy "blade" which sits just below the top run of the chain........& more remarkably, fairly deep scoring of the reinforcing bead which forms part of the tube the fixing bolt goes through & should be about an inch from (above) the chain as it comes of the bottom of the sprocket.  So.....what do you reckon......is it down to the 'O' ring chain being too big......a period when the bike has been run with a seriously slack chain, a knackered chain ?? (she runs loose then tight for no obvious reason) ....or "none of the above" ??  The angle off the sprocket is about 45 degrees, so how the heck that scoring has happened there, I just can't see.

CB750 / Colour match for Sulfur yellow ?
« on: June 02, 2009, 11:05:38 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has a comparative RAL Code, or BS, or Pantone code for a near as perfect - or perfect match for the Honda Sulfur yellow colour.  I'd like to get some enamel mixed up but for obvious reasons ( obvious to anyone who's seen the pics I posted of the bike !) I haven't got a panel to colour match.

CB750 / F1 original Honda exhaust rescue ?
« on: May 22, 2009, 09:40:33 PM »
My bike is currently set up with a Motad system.  With it came the original Honda downpipes currently rigged to an original Paul Dunstall silencer, which I'm going to offload.

Also with the  bike came the original Honda exhaust.  Externally, I'd grade it 8/10 or better.  There is some very light marking to the chrome with a small section of rusted off chrome, on the under side by the drain hole, totally out of sight.

The internal condition looking down it from the "engine" end is lightly rusted but I'd say very serviceable,.......the internal tube is quite widely perforated, as per it's original construction.  The baffle plates look ok.

At the exit end, the 'tin' perforated tube is suffering a bit.  It's about 5/10 for condition.  The perforations are much smaller but a lot more of them & it's pretty "soft".....lightly holed through in places.

I thought I'd seen replacement "end tubes" but having just checked the Fiche, it looks as if the tubes are for other models & there is no sign that the silencer is servicable ?

Anyone have any experience of rescuing one of these ?  I reckon the perforated tube could be overlaid or another of slightly smaller diameter inserted ?? or is it neither here nor there & do you reckon I should just fit it & be darned ?? I don't want to knac*er up an otherwise good (looking) original silencer by "messing" - but I do want it to be servicable for as long as possible.

CB750 / Easing back rear brake pistons - without doing damage.
« on: May 21, 2009, 08:13:47 AM »
I can't imagine I'm the first to find this tricky. I'm about putting new pads in the rear brake on the F1.  I expected, because I knew no better ::) - that the 'contact face' of the piston would be flat......but as far as I can see in the dark recesses it's hollow ?? & it's just the outer "rim" which presses on the back of the pads ? either that or the pistons are stuck in the chambers & I can't see any piston  :o
The 'old' pads were pretty 'thin' & there was well short of the necessary gap to drop the new pads in.  I've been able to get the 'outer' of the two gaps increased - hopefully by retracting the piston rather than bending the disc, the piston did seem to "give" a bit but the inner one is a bu**er.
Just a matter of patience & application ???.......or is there a trick......the front one, which is now working took three elephants standing on it to retract it - I can't see me getting that sort of 'wellie' onto the back one & hope I haven't got to break the whole rear end down just to change a pad. :-\
Needless to say, the Manual says' "remove old pads & replace with new" - & I'm more used to brake shoes  ;)

New Member Introductions / New member intro
« on: May 18, 2009, 11:01:39 PM »
Hello, to all, a new CB750 owner & Forum member.  I've just had an 'evloution' or to be more to the point, revolution in the Garage, with two Hinckley Bonnies & an a 1950's 'lunker' going out & a couple of 1989 Hondas, both 'mint', a VTR250 &  CB-1 coming in to replace them.  Downsizing in cc's, weight & size.  So, to compensate, I've brought in a 1976 (reg'd1978) CB750F.  The VTR's the wifes bike, the CB-1 mine for when I need 'waking up' a bit.

The CB750's only had a couple of owners from new, the first for her first year & the second from 1979 until now.  She's always been looked after - she's been out on loan to nephews & son-in laws of the owner so she's clocked up 32k miles, but they're a family of motorcycle racers & engineers, so she's mechanically pretty sound.  I've just 'un-done' the 1980's 'revision' of fitting CVK carbs, presumably from a Kawasaki as this was,  I gather a 'done thing' ?  She came with her original carbs & they're now fitted & she's running as sweet a a nut.  She's got her original exhaust & silencer too.....pipes are 7/10 for condition, exhaust is 8.5/10.......+ an original Paul Dunstall silencer & a full Motad system, which is currently on the bike, BUT I reckon I'll put her back to 'spec' as soon as I can - including swopping the 'go faster' finned covers which she has all over her.  All the originals - except the round 'inner' generator cover- are with her, thankfully.

She's "brake pads" away from an MOT....she had one done two years ago, but was never ridden after it as the owner at 71, found her too heavy to hold up !!

The only real 'downside' & in some ways it shouldn't be, is that she was given a "proper" Custom paint job back in 1978 - & she's still got it.  She looks like a Tarts Handbag.....but at least she sounds like a sewing machine !

Looking forward to getting to grips with her & hopefully get & keep her "right".  She's too good, in her present condition, paint aesthetics excepted, to do too much to, so I'm aiming to keep the overall patina rather than "do her up".....but need to find a tank & 'tail' !
