CB750 / Re: Petrol tank chrome strip .
« on: March 30, 2016, 09:23:34 AM »
Hi Guys ,
This is all interesting stuff and I`m sure most of it is correct but on the cover of The Motor Cyclist April 1969 it shows a sandcast which they road tested and that has the black stripe strip on it .I cannot see that that magazine would get a  prototype model for testing . Also someone  said that Honda did not sell complete engines ,Why not  .And due to the fact that a lot were destroyed in the early days of production I do not believe they were rebuilt .I believe they got new engines from Honda . I would not trust many people to rebuild an engine ,especially main dealers .
                                                   Cheers , Alan .

Hi Guys , Trouble here
I have just looked at the april 1969 Brighton show done by Pathe news and the bike there looking up at is a sandcast with the horn on the left . They show a close up of the tank and the chrome strip is the one everyone says is for a K1 ? .Does this mean that we are all making assumptions on what is correct for the year based on what other people say is gospel .Old footage like this may sort out a few answers on what is right . Someone said my double lipped front mudguard was wrong but the 750 expert says K0`s had them from 1970 on . I will do some more digging to see if I can find out any more .
                         Cheers ,Alan.

CB750 / Re: Frame and engine numbers .
« on: March 28, 2016, 08:32:32 PM »
Hi ,
I have spoken directly with Honda Sports America  and they have no records of what went with what . They can only tell you what year a bike was imported from Japan and that's it . I have spoken to three different people at Honda and they all said the same thing . I have never seen a service book for a cb750  but I do have an original handbook for a k2 and it says always quote frame no for frame parts and engine no for engine parts implying that they were never the same . Has anyone got a service book to confirm what has been said ?. If there was a service book the numbers would be entered in by the dealer not Honda as is the case with cars .
                                                                    Cheers , Alan .

Hi Pete,
I agree totally with you ,however this several hundred business seems to affect everyone ,myself included . I must stop this at once . But after 77000 K1`s and 50000 K0`s how can the difference be the same at the beginning of the run and at the end ?. Surely if no 1 K1 had 400 difference no 77000 must be considerably higher .People still broke chains etc and needed new engines . I think that what you said at the start is right ,if the engine is a K0 and the frame a K0 then that`s it .I do not think you can prove either way what the original configuration was . Honda has no records .
                                           Thanks again , Alan .

CB750 / Frame and engine numbers .
« on: March 28, 2016, 06:35:49 PM »
Hi Guys,
I have been asked recently by prospective buyers about my frame and engine numbers and I have come to the conclusion that no one knows the full story .One person said there should be no more that 500 difference as it is a K0 ,as K1`s that he worked on had about the same difference .My research has shown that there could be as many as 9500 difference between engine and frame on K0`s alone . This info comes from America and shows 44450 bikes sold but 53300 engine numbers allocated at the same time .We all know the story of the porosity on sandcasts and the breaking chains on K0`s . How can it be only 500 difference from sandcast to the end of the K1 production ?. Does anyone have any concrete evidence on what is correct as it affects prospective purchasers .
                                                                  Cheers , Alan .

Hi Ash,
Thanks for that , by the way my first K1 I built I sold to Frank for 14k and was pleased with the sale ,but he now has it up for 20k so I think that tells you about the way I build bikes and the attention to detail that I build in .I am very lucky to be able to spend a lot of time on my builds so things appear to happen really quickly so I apologise to anyone who does not have the time or money to do it .One gets a little out of touch when locked away in the workshop . I hope you have some good fortune with your own build Ash. As an aside ,if anyone needs any info on where to get certain parts from (k0-k1) I am only too happy to oblige .I think I can now source virtually all the parts for these bikes .
                                                          Cheers , Alan .

Hi Ash,
The bike came from James H . It needed a complete ground up rebuild . My take on this is that I have saved another bike from the garage of no return ,you know the type that never finishes anything or does not realise just how much it costs .I am not talking about the big stuff that we all know about but the parts that are unseen like a brand new coil pack + caps cost £250  and new bolts throughout including engine mountings at £17 each .
As far as the colour goes I am sure that FTFFROG has got it wrong as one of the Brighton show bikes was gold and that was 1969 I think ..
I am sure this discussion could go on for ages so I will not say anymore for now . I will keep you posted as far as a sale goes though .
                                           Cheers  , Alan .

Hi Guys,
I`m the optimist that built it . If someone is prepared to pay that sort of figure who am I to argue . As you are all aware the cost of doing it is not always recouped in the sale price ,I am trying to buck this trend of doing it for nothing . This is the third bike I have built and the two previous owners are delighted with their purchases . And yes Ash it was your seat ,and very good it is too . Please do not confuse this bike with an average one ,the difference between wow and so so is huge as far as cost of doing is concerned .The chroming bill alone was £850.00 +vat . I invested over 400 hours into this + parts so I do not see why people complain of my pricing . I understand why some people get upset at the prices as it seems to be pushing up the price of all cb 750`s .
Sorry for waffle , Cheers ,Alan .

Hi Guys ,
Just finished my 2`nd Gold K1 .It`s the one with the white background . I would appreciate any comments on the bike .Cant download pics again but its on Car and Classic as usual . This will probably be my last full rebuild as the quality of new parts is just not good enough . When you are spending upto 9k in parts you would expect a reasonably good finish to the product ,{chrome } .No matter who is selling either from this country or Japan the quality is iffy at best .  Will keep in touch though as you never know what may turn up as a project . Cheers , Alan .

Hi Guys,
Thank you very much for the favourable comments , just to say that it looks better in the flesh than on a pic . To answer a couple of points , the paintwork was a bodywork kit from Yamiya  and is of a wonderful quality . and I have been offered 10k and then 13k sight unseen by different people .That will give you an idea of the finished values . I will say that I took real pains to make the bike an accurate representation of what was correct at the time . I still cannot believe it only took me three months from start to finish . Thanks , Alan . And also all of you for the help during construction .

Hi Simon ,
Your right about the astronomic cost of doing the bike right . What amazes me though is the amount of bikes I see for sale as supposedly correct but even a newbie like me can spot the errors . It always seems to be the same things that people get wrong namely the seat  the shocks or the exhaust .As mine is a K1 I have had the extra expense of the K0 shocks and exhaust which is much more expensive than a K2 .I fitted these parts so if anyone looks at it I do not want the embarrassment of these things being pointed out to me . That does not mean I have got every thing right though . I am sure when I post the pics someone will tell me otherwise ,I hope .  Cheers Alan .

CB750 / Re: clutch free play
« on: July 06, 2015, 07:16:08 PM »
Hi Billy,
I have also had this problem recently but with genuine cables . The conclusion I reached was that some of  the clutch  plates were sticking together ,ie not separating fully after standing for some time .Eventually they settled down with use and then the gap remained constant . Just a thought !  Cheers Alan .
