CB500/550 / CB 550 Two Neutrals
« on: February 21, 2020, 07:48:38 PM »
I seem to keep finding a neutral when changing 4th to 5th or 5th back to 4th, not all the time but quite often. Anyone else found this problem or is it my shifting that is at fault?

One option is to use the number plate/lamp bracket but you might need to use the smaller type indicators. If your grab rail has the mountings intact you need the stems - part no. 33607-374-670 as shown.

CB500/550 / CB550 Rocker Cover
« on: January 22, 2020, 07:35:04 PM »
I had an oil leak which turned out to be a crack in the rocker cover, I have found a used one in very good condition but I think its an older one as it has 8 rocker shafts. Will it fit my engine as it is or could I fit the 4 rocker shafts from my old one? there is also some side to side movement in the rockers is this normal?

The switch gear wiring on a 550 F1/F2 runs to a box under the tank and that is the main connection place and the bowl on a F is very shallow as it doesn't have many connectors in it.

Here is a pic of a F bowl and you will see that it is not as deep as the ones from the rest of the 550's.

Ah yes that's the one I have and explains why the wiring is so hard to fit in. My bike does seem to be a bit of a mix up of parts.

All of the 500 had a side indent and the wiring fita in okish

All the ones on Ebay have the side indent and they do look deeper than mine so I think I would be okay with that, mine is almost impossible to get the wiring in, any idea why there is an indent in just one side?

I don't have a box under the tank - all the wires join in the headlamp and the ignition switch is between the clocks, the loom reaches the headlamp bowl with ease it's just hard to squeeze the rats nest inside when fitting the headlamp.
OK. So it sounds like you have a CB550/4 F2 headlamp bowl, which is shallow, as the wiring all goes back to a bundle under the tank on the F2. So, assuming yours is an F1 as you don't have the electrics box under the tank, all the wiring goes in the headlamp bowl, and the bowl should be deeper... That's why you are having trouble cramming it all in there.

Yes that makes sense but it's hard to see the depth of the bowl in a photo online, which one do I need - I assume the one with the side indent would be no good.

I would like to replace the headlamp bowl as it has a few cracks, I have found several on ebay but they are different to mine as they all have a large indent to one side (photo) mine is quite shallow and it is very difficult to get all the wiring in, perhaps mine is not the correct one?  why the large indent?

Yes he has a lot of very good videos on the CB550 as well, I have watched them all and I found his carb rebuild video very useful https://youtu.be/JFTOfYl5BSc I don't particularly like what he does to the bikes but his knowledge of Honda fours seems pretty good.

I have mine set second down from the top, I have type 069 carbs, standard 98 main jets and pod filters and all is well. If you are not sure I would go for the middle position.

Very good quality, fits as it should and no problems with carb settings, excellent value, looks good, it's a bit noisy I suppose but that's the only negative.

I have the original carb to manifold rubbers on mine and no problems at all, only tip I would give is warm up the engine and tighten the clips when the rubber is softer and more flexible.

I have looked through all the photos of the bike when I got it and found this - looks like the part but can't see why it's there or what its for - very strange!

Its not, cant see properly but rh rear engine mount maybe from a 550

Not an engine mount - I have been riding the bike so I would have noticed that.
