Many thanks for all the replies. No easy answer really, I would like the practicality of a top box I mean where do you put your helmet when you park up, but no rack is going to make the bike look better and I am sure the handling would be affected. I suppose I would like to see a 550 with a rack that I can buy that looks okay. Anyway no rush until the weather improves (probably next summer)

I would like a top box on my CB550 so I need a rack, the only supplier I have found is Craven Equipment who do a rack and fitting kit for a CB750 which they say should fit mine although they haven't tried it, they are to far away for me to go and test fit so that is not an option. I don't think the Cruzimage jets should be a problem as long as they are the correct ones, when I say I used cheap rebuild kits I mean unbranded from ebay, cheap for a reason. If I was starting over again I would advise to keep all the old jets and just change the gaskets, we live and learn!
I have taken this from another post - it might help to identify the correct parts.

I had the exact same problem and I thought I had tried everything, I don't know which carbs you have but mine had the wrong pilot screws fitted, should be solid rather than drilled ones which also have a different profile, I had also fitted a cheap set of jets and needles, I rebuilt he carbs again with the right jets and pilot screws and put a lot of effort into cleaning the pilot circuit which is covered in detail on the forum somewhere. I have 069 carbs. Mine now runs and ticks over a treat at all temperatures, and I am running on pod filters with standard jets.

Position of the VIN plate suggests it is not from USA. Although as you say it has US style indicators. F1 had gators on fork legs, F2 none.
Strange as my USA F VIN is a much higher number but marked as manufactured in June 1975. CB500F-2008995. But my engine is a lower number than yours, begins with a 1. I thought only the later Ks had engines beginning with a 2. The plot thickens. Mine is also shiny orange that I believed was an F1 colour.
Yours does look good.
When I stripped the paint on the tank it looks like it was originally metallic Cherry Red. The red on it now is purely my choice which is Sunburst red.

Well I don't think it's an import but there are some odd things like the indicators which I think are smaller on the UK model, It's a 1977 R reg and think it is an F1 but perhaps someone will know based on the numbers:
Chassis no. CB550F-1027330
Engine no. CB550E-2019620
It will tell you on the log book if its an import, date of manufacture will be different than date of 1st registration in the UK.

Username comes from my lifelong interest in helicopters although I could never afford to buy one! Had plenty of bikes during the seventies though.

I have just about finished restoring my 1977 CB550F, it was in a very bad state having stood since 2000. I have spent countless hours getting it to this point but that's okay because I am now retired, I suppose I should have known that it would be a money pit - all those parts add up! Anyway I have ridden her a couple of times before the rain came and all is good apart from a little bit of carb tuning. Although I have only just joined the forum I have been getting a lot of info from it during the build so thanks to all who provided the help.
