Just online from garage: I'm in front of rear wheel assembly and wondering what side first? Logically I would first install right one (brake side), until fully seated. Then from opposite side long spacer, short spacer and left bearing until it touches spacers. Then tightening retainer while checking for free rotation of bearings?
Please correct if wrong
PS: normally I would not ask and do as above, just seen some posts on US forum instructing other way?

Think it's the other way, with the bearing having the retainer as "reference" bearing for wheel alignment in frame.
The opposite side then is slaved off that one depending on dimensions of spacer. It's not critical (in the sense that it can sit anywhere without causing misalignment) as long as its able to tighten fully with spindle against the spacer.

OK, but when first goes left one (retainer side), before driving it in both spacers must go in as first. This is the only way to insert longer spacer. This looks to me bit unlogical.
Maybe somebody else can confirm it?

Hopefully someone can verify for you with a 550.
Principle is that if you put the non retainer bearing in first, then if it's too far in (it has to have a tolerance there to accommodate variation in production dimensions of wheel hub and spacers) then when you put the retainer one in, you'd then be trying to move the free bearing by tightening the retainer. That's not what the retainer is for, bearing should be positioned first and retained by the ring, only then can you set the opposite bearing into correct spacing from this.
If you don't get the retained bearing fully captured then the wheel can effectively float across the axle.

You can start the onewithout retainer but must leave it not fully home till the retained one is tight against shoulder then finish driving 1st bearing in to spacers

Retained one first Erny, that's so that IF the collar gets dislodged as your driving it home you can still insert it back through the other side. That make sense?
