Desperately Seeking!! / Re: Honda CB250 or CB360 G5 Wanted
« on: March 27, 2024, 11:00:07 AM »
I have owned a CB350K since 1985 and done a lot of miles, including, rather insanely, touring in France.  Get as low a mileage as you can, clean the centrifugal oil filter all the time, change the oil very often.  The biggest problem I have experienced is with crankshafts, sadly, they cannot be rebuilt, the big ends go and then it is hard to find good second hand ones.  I'm on my third crank now, although I only ride it gently these days and then not very often.  They also get hot and bothered in heavy traffic and the clutch starts to drag, and the CV carb sliders stick causing them to be sluggish on one cylinder.  I got round this problem by fitting slide carbs and now it runs better than it ever has, much more responsive. (fans of originality please ignore that comment  ;D)

They are a fun little bike, but they are small and I always wished Honda had made a 650 version.

budget is a bit woeful really, I can only really afford about £2k, £3k if I sell the 500.

Thank you Dave, that is sensible, and funny.  It reminds me of a time many years ago when someone wanted to meet me in a layby to look at a bike.  I thought it strange.  When I arrived he had a balaclava on under his helmet even though it was summer.  I departed very quickly. ;D

Thanks all, great advice as always.  I am now on the horns of a dilemma between, Triumph Trident 900 and VFR800.  Will see if I can find some to try.

It's 29 years since I bought a bike and that was in boxes.  Do people allow potential buyers to test ride or is it considered a no no?

I hope people here might be able to advise.  My wife and I would like to do some touring in Europe but although we used to go everywhere on my CB500, we were a lot younger then and so was the bike.  Nowadays we probably need something more modern and a bit more comfortable.  Bearing in mind that the newest bike I've ever ridden is a 1978 CX500, I would appreciate some advice.  My initial investigations have brought me to Triumph Sprint 900 perhaps....

My observation about brake squeal on these bikes would be that it is just the way things are and we just put up with it.  I like to think it is just an indication that something is actually happening.

wow, they are so clean, quite astonishing.  Also, your workshop looks very smart too.  i think it would take me about a hundred years to get mine anywhere near as tidy.

yes, will do.  It has seen plenty of salt before, the bike is pretty ratty.  I've got 'special' holes in the rear mudguard that let the salt out  :D

There's definitely a storm brewing, just putting the bikes inside for the winter, I can't believe that's another riding season over 😭😭😭😭

Having spent the entire summer trying to get my bike working properly following a winter rest, and having only ridden about 20 miles altogether during summer, I have decided I'm keeping mine going this winter.  ;D

CB500 four, continually used since rebuild in 1995.  I'm pretty sure the forum was text only in those days and my computer was Windows for Workgroups 3.11.  Bought my bike for £150 in some boxes.

CB500/550 / Re: 500 Exhaust system v Needle position on carb?
« on: October 11, 2023, 10:46:30 AM »
On mine, I have the needles in the standard position but I have larger main jets.  I also have individual filters.  Runs perfectly.

To determine if your needle position is correct you will need to look at the colour of the spark plugs.

I've got one and I think it is OK.  It's still on a wheel.  Not chrome plated.

I agree with John, don't do it too tight, you can always give it an extra nip later if it leaks.  I have a spare filter bolt in my toolbox which I kept from years ago so wouldn't have to wait for a replacement if ever it gets stuck.  Haven't needed it yet.
