CB500/550 / Ignition Coils recommendation
« on: September 01, 2023, 12:09:48 PM »
Over the years I have had a lot of trouble with errant sparks, especially when damp or wet.  A year or so, I replaced the original coils with aftermarket ones but not completely happy with their performance either.  I have new plugs and new caps.  Periodically, number 1 cylinder drops out with a weak spark.  I tried reducing the spark plug gap which has helped.

Does anyone have a recommendation for good reliable replacements as I am not sure about the quality of the ones I am using added to which they don't fit correctly on the frame anyway.

Thoughts??

Because my bike is ratty, I get to use it all year round, yay, win-win.  (Although it does have a sticky clutch cable which gets worse in bad weather, must pick one up this week)

In order to transfer kinetic energy and thus slow down the bike, the pads must apply friction creating heat and, in the case of my bike, sound energy in the form of a loud squeaking.  My brakes need all the help they can get so I'm happy with the squeaking.  It tells me some energy transfer is taking place  ;D

I have always used EBC on my bike and they always work well.  They have a tendency to squeal but that's when I know they are correctly adjusted.  The brake on these bikes is rather primitive but is more effective than it 'feels'.

also, at about 8 through to 6 o'clock, does it look like there is a gap between the drum liner and the hub?

It looks like the locating lugs from the drive cushion have broken off which might suggest the cushions themselves are perished.  I would have a look to make sure.

I agree, never carry a spare link, no need.  It definitely isn't a weak point, the load is taken by the solid link part, there shouldn't be any great side to side forces if everything is adjusted correctly and the chain and sprockets are in good condition.

While we are on the subject, I would also recommend fitting a Scott-Oiler, marvellous contraption, maintains your chain in tip-top order.  I have one on my 500, hidden where the airbox used to go.  Cannot rate it highly enough.

In my opinion and experience over the last 40 years of riding a motorbike, split links work perfectly.  The only problem you might have is with a badly adjusted or  poorly lubricated chain, and of course making sure you have it on the right way :)

CB500/550 / Wheel rebuilding
« on: August 15, 2022, 08:48:02 PM »
Insprired by Juits' wheel rebuild and looking ahead to the winter, I think it is time to tackle my front wheel which has needed a build for at least 20 years now.

My questions are, what size is the rim?

What spokes should I order?

Who are good suppliers?

Apart from originality, are there practical considerations between, stainless steel, aluminium, or chromium plated steel?  My preference would be for stainless steel but I thought maybe it wouldn't be as stable as aluminium or steel?

I would be grateful for your thoughts.

Many thanks,
Steve
