Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Honda CA77/78 spares
« on: June 03, 2019, 08:38:46 AM »
Couldn't sell my CA78 complete so now dismantled it to sell as spares. Lots of good spares available at sensible prices. Too much to list but, Seat, Frame with NOVA, rear light, complete engine (dismantled for refurb), stand, forks, swinging arm, shockers etc etc etc

Brian Louis Barnes has written a detailed step by step strip and rebuild of PD46 carbs which is stored in the files section of this website. At first it seems a bit daunting and complicated but if you're methodical and follow what he says you'll get an understanding of the carbs and realise that actually there isn't that much to it. Take lots of pictures, and especially of the spring between 2 & 3 that works the chokes on 3 & 4 so you know how it goes back when you rebuild them. I've just had to strip mine and at the same time I've helicoiled all the screwholes for the float bowls. Another slightly nervy task which with care has ended up a complete success.

Don't worry Peterengland.. With PD46 carbs you'll get plenty of practice at pulling and dismantling and putting them back and those times you quote will soon come down. I've just taken less than an hour to put mine in and everything back together. There are little tricks you learn on how to make it easier.  ;D ;D ;D

I wont repeat the sorry tale of the Riken rings I bought for my CB550K3 with the oil rings which DSS maintained fit my engine but of which the oil rails clearly didn't, but safe to say I have very little faith their customer service. I sent them the rings back with a piston and the barrels and asked them to try them out in the bore but they said they didn't have a ring compressor and maintained that with a ring compressor they would fit. Absolutely crass. t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

has anyone looked at the CB500/550 carb specs on SOHC that were posted by Glenn Schauffer in 2013? My bike  came out of the factory in August 1977 and has PD46 stamped on the carb rack. Do X46 carbs exist and would they have X46 stamped on them or PD46?,

A rattling engine doesn't pout me off 'cos lots of them rattle in one way or another and usually a bit of balancing renders them acceptable . Refurbing the engine isn't all that difficult anyhow but the money can disappear pretty quickly into chroming and wheels and paintwork. hate to think how many uncosted hours I've put into mine 550's though

Cheers Bryan. I've discovered from the SOHC specs file that I have the right jets. The jets weren't blocked but I've put them in the ultrasound tank. So to clean the circuits I assume requires ultrasound? Only got a small tank which means the pain of dismantling the carbs from the rack and bath them one by one. Groan.

CB500/550 / CB550K3 PD46 carb jet sizes - the eternal querstion
« on: February 28, 2019, 08:30:06 PM »
My 1978 CB550K3 PD46 carbs have got main jets of 90 and slow-running jets of 38. Is that correct? I struggle to get it to run smoothly at low revs and it always feels like it's starved of petrol when I open it up. The Haynes manual only refers to the earlier type carbs.

It's getting harder to find the panels and very hard to find good ones never mind any with a decent paint finish.. I've been looking for the RHS panel for a CB550K1 for ages without any luck. If anyone has one and needs a good LHS panel for a K3, K4, or F1 happy to do a swap.
