CB500/550 / CB550K3 oil control ring problem.
« on: March 29, 2017, 05:47:51 PM »
Need help again with my 550 build. Just got some new rings from DS for my CB550K3 with standard bores. The two top ring gaps are fine. The oil control rings (top and bottom) fit in the bore and the gap is fine - as long as the spacer isn't there. Put the spacer in and there is no way they fit the bore, either using the old spacer or the new spacer. The problem seem seems to be twofold. Firstly the new rings are 2.24mm thick whereas the old ones were 1.94mm (so I'm assuming they've worn down). Secondly, the internal diameter of the oil-control spacer is not the same as the diameter of the ring groove, i.e. with it's end butt jointed it actually holds the rings out from the piston and doesn't allow them to compress enough to get them in the bores -that was also true of the old spacer but of course with the thinner rings the pistons fit in the bores. The logical answer is that I have to gap the spacer such that it is a snug fit in the groove and allows the rings to fully compress. Is that indeed the answer please because I've never encountered that before? I'm also surprised that the existing oil control rings are 03mm thinner than the new ones from DS because if they've worn down from the original new size then as I've now found out the pistons wouldn't have gone into the bores. Surely nobody could have shaved 0.3mm off the circumference of the rings

CB500/550 / PD46 carb question .... where does this bit go..
« on: March 27, 2017, 08:00:55 PM »
Help please. I'm just putting the carbs back together in accordance with Brian Barnes' excellent guide, and I've got carbs 1 & 2 mounted.. I thought I'd taken photos from every conceivable angle to leave nothing unrecorded, but I have a piece of plastic that I can't find a home for and which doesn't appear in Brian's work or on any exploded view that I can find. Judging by the diameter of the hole, it goes somewhere on the throttle shaft, so before I go any further could someone please tell me exactly where and facing which way?

CB500/550 / Piston ring compressors
« on: March 26, 2017, 10:59:19 AM »
Is it easy to use piston ring compressors when rebuilding a CB550? It strikes me that there's not much space with the barrells dropped to get the compressors out when the last two pistons have gone in.

CB500/550 / Gaskets - to grease or not to grease
« on: March 23, 2017, 07:40:47 AM »
No subject on earth brings up more differing opinions. The only reason I can see to grease a gasket such as a cylinder base/head gasket seems to be that if you need to pull the bike apart again it rescues the gasket. Is there any other reason for greasing the gasket, because I would never reuse engine gaskets on principle. I intend to put mine on dry - am I correct?

CB500/550 / Needle position
« on: March 22, 2017, 07:51:13 PM »
My CB550K3 runs a bit rich, so while I've got the carbs stripped I thought I'd check the needle jet, which should be on the middle groove. It's on 2nd from top meaning it's getting less petrol through which comes as a bit of a surprise. The jets are standard as is the exhaust, and the air-cleaner is recent - and yes I really have gone to the far end of a fart to get the float levels right. Have I missed anything? Could it be oil?

CB500/550 / Gear pedal shaft oil seal leaking.

Any tips and tricks in replacing this? I assume it's a case of prising the old out and pressing the new in.

CB500/550 / Cleaning crankcases
« on: March 05, 2017, 07:50:05 AM »
My 550K3 top-end is off for blasting, my crankcase sides are polishing up nicely, but that leaves the crankcase at the front below the barrels which is pretty dull, covered in ribs, and either it's just totally tarnished or it has some sort of paint covering on it. It's covered in ribs and nooks and crannies so has anyone got a suggestion on the easiest way to get it looking good without spending months rubbing my fingers to the bone?

CB500/550 / Dismantling carburettors - or not.
« on: March 03, 2017, 11:22:25 AM »
Can someone write the missing page that the Haynes manual couldn't be bothered to include please? I'm dismantling the carbs for blasting. Despite the odd spots of corrosion I (and Andy the Motorcycle Doctor in Ashurst Wood East Grinstead who deserves every plug he can get) have managed to get everything off the throttle except the No. 1 carb slide arm. Firstly, having removed it's locking screw and despite copious amounts of WD40 it's stuck fast. When (if) I do manage to free it, does the shaft just slide out of the carb body towards the other carbs?. I ask because on it's end it has a brass washer which looks as though it wouldn't just pull out of the carb body UNLESS you have to remove the metal plug in the carb body on the other side and take it out that way. .

CB500/550 / What's my oil filter bolt got inside it?
« on: March 02, 2017, 03:28:36 PM »
Can't really see it very well here but the second hole from the right of the oil filter bolt is blocked by a piece of cylindrical metal (brass?) which has a spring below it (to the open end of the bolt) and this is held in place by a pin (small hole 2nd picture) going through the bolt. My question is what the hell is it? Also the holes in the bolt have all got bits of metal scarf as if the hole doesn't seem to have been finished of properly. Anyone else got the same?.

CB500/550 / To blast or not to blast
« on: February 27, 2017, 09:52:55 PM »
My 1978 Keihin P46A carbs have got the battleship grey coating on them. They look pretty grimy compared to the rest of the bike which is shining up nicely. Has anyone had similar carbs blasted and if so was it just a clean or did you get the grey coating blasted off as well? I worry that if the coating is removed the carbs would oxidise pretty quickly and look grimy again.

CB500/550 / Yikes!!!! Water water everywhere
« on: February 25, 2017, 06:05:07 PM »
Just took the exhausts of my 550K3 and was stunned at the amount of brown water that came out of 2 of them when I tipped them up. If it's condensation then it must have built up over a long time. Has anyone else experienced the same and if so what's the solution? (no pun intended)

CB500/550 / Sissy bar
« on: August 29, 2016, 08:55:49 PM »
My girlfriend has led a life of far too much luxury and is now asking if she can have a backrest for my 550 K3. Does anyone know if you can get universal type sissy bars that fit onto universal type luggage racks?

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the oil seal behind the generator without splitting the crankcases?
