Hi Phil, welcome aboard! Not so many 650’s that I’m aware of plenty of 400, 500, 550’s. All nice machines of course.

Hi all.  I'm Phil from Bridgend in South Wales.  I've been riding since I was 16 and now a lot closer to 70 than I really want to be  ;)  Currently have an R1200GS, a Honda CX500 that I renovated a couple of years ago and a more recently purchased CB650Z.  The CB is relatively tidy but low on compression so top end is off at the moment waiting on the arrival of new rings.  Block and head have been vapour blasted to tidy them up and carbs have been stripped and cleaned in an ultrasound bath.  Hopefully it will all go back together again but I may well be back here asking questions if it doesn't.

I plain bought one of these very pretty aftermarket items for my CB400F2. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/292633661096
However at least in my case I found the tie rod, that bar between the joint and lever was too long and I needed to use the one from my original, so don't throw away!  ;D

I guess the lithium ion batteries life is dependant on number of charges? We have an old iPad here that the grand kids use now and it is 13 year old now! Battery seems good still. Couldn’t tell you how many times it’s been charged though!🤣🤣 There is likely other factors that determine the life. We don’t usually keep vehicles for too long before we need a change.😜

If it helps I'm pretty sure I have my original one that I replaced with a less than perfect aftermarket one. Yours for the cost of postage if it helps as a practice part. PM me if this is of any use.(Yes it is sloppy).

There is a wire circlip you need to winkle out with a fine pick.

Wow, I didn't know that Ash :o. Well done. Is the bit that suffers the wear the ball or the socket (sounds like a hip joint!)?

I have tried a couple of times in the past to get the joint apart but failed! In the end I took the complete gear lever for chroming but as I knew the plater I asked him to do his best to avoid damaging the joint and to his credit it came back all ok. I don’t know anyone who has managed to separate the joint to reassemble it.

The actual joint is a weak spot on the 400/4 suffering with high wear and becoming sloppy.

I think Ken (Oddjob) on here did try to make a conversion using a rose joint arrangement, I don't know if he completed it. You may find something relating to it if you try a search on the 400 and 500 pages although when he left Ken deleted a lot of his posts unfortunately.
