Title: CBX1000C Prolink
Post by: heli_madken on May 04, 2022, 11:23:56 PM
Just finished my CBX1000C restoration and impatiently waiting for the V5 to come so I can have my first proper ride.

I imported the bike from the US in 2020, mechanically sound but very poor cosmetically and the rear of the frame was quite badly bent, this is how the bike looked -

I did a full bare frame restore, every part was polished or painted, I did all the work involved myself. I dont like either the silver/grey or white colours used on the C model and not being worried about originality I have gone for a red scheme which follows loosely the design scheme of the original bike, really pleased with how its turned out -

The bike is fitted with a SuperTrapp stainless exhaust that was very badly damaged so I spent a long time repairing it. Took the dents out of the downpipes with various sized steel balls hammer through the tubes, worked a treat. The reason I wanted to save the exhaust was this noise -

Cant wait to go for a ride.

Very nice work, just in time for summer too.

I think this is one of the most epic engine ever made too, hope you enjoy riding it.

Fantastic, great job. I turned the video up to max just to hear that lovely exhaust. The CBX will always be an iconic bike.

I love the red colour scheme suits it so much better than the original silver.

Did you do a project build post on here or is it too new a model?

Thanks for the comments everyone much appreciated.

Thanks ted you can find my build thread over on the CBX forum - http://www.cbxclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=11871 (http://www.cbxclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=11871)

The red is supposed to be Candy Glory Red as found on the Z model CBX's. I used RSBike Paint colour and base coat but I just could not get it to come out exactly the same, always a little darker but I am pleased with the colour itself so what the hey!

So did you paint it all yourself Ken? Rattle cans or do you have a paint booth?

I kind of have a paint booth. I section off a portion of the garage with plastic sheet which covers the ceiling, walls and floor and is all Velcro attached together. Actually quite effective and minimises the amount of overspray getting out. HVLP guns are good at minimising overspray as well.

I have an air fed mask and powerful compressor which allows me to use 2K clear for finishing.

Also have a small vinyl cutter which I use to make masks for the lettering, design the lettering in CorelDraw.

I did the same thing using a cheap pop up tent I bought off flea bay. Connected a small ducted extract fan drawing air through the muslin covered mosquito screen and installed a cheap 2kw oil filled radiator. Used mainly for ‘rattle can’ jobs as I’ve not graduated to proper painting just yet. It’s lightning quick to set up and provides a warm, dust free environment.

Been reading your project on the link you posted. An interesting read I've always liked the CBX 1000 with its 6 cylinders they must be sooooo smooooth.

Thanks Ted.

Hasnt all been straight forward but I touched lucky with the engine itself it is in great shape.

V5 arrived today  ;D ;D ;D All in took just short of 4 weeks which is brilliant considering Easter and May day would have slowed things down. Also considering VJMC got one digit wrong on the frame number which I only noticed after posting the application. Then they followed up with totally the wrong advice which thankfully I ignored. Moral here is check and double check the paperwork.

So I am off to Ayr tomorrow for a number plate, 140 mile plus round trip but hopefully I may get a ride in as the weather looks good.

Bit nervous about the first ride, hopefully everything will work ok.
