CB350/400 / Re: CB400F Oil pressure switch slow leak

Hey everyone,

I haven't taken a look yet, I have been mainly investigating on the web. Will keep you updated

Cheers

For reference I use the revue technique moto for the Honda CB400F and Norton Commando.
They do say to use the idling engine method.
What I have read elsewhere is that if your horseshoe is binding or the spring is old the conventional method doesn’t work, as there is too much resistance for the spring and stem bit to set the slack correctly.
The fix is to use the « engine off , screwdriver inside » that you described.

I don’t have the shop manual right now, maybe there is something on there?

Anyway here was the information I have. I need to adjust the chain soon so I’ll keep an eye out ;)

CB350/400 / CB400F Oil pressure switch slow leak
« on: April 11, 2024, 06:56:30 AM »
Hello ladies and gents!

A year ago I had a slow oil leak at the oil pressure switch thread.
When running at temp I would lose a drop or two every five to ten minutes.
A degreased the oil pump housing, switch and the threads before putting
yellow loctite (577) on said threads.
It worked for 300km and started leaking again.
So I got a new switch. Turns out the OG one has replacements currently manufactured
and fitted on modern japanese cars. So yeah no need to spend 60€ for a used one on
Ebay as I previously thought.
Fitted said new switch without loctite (Wasnt mentioned in the holy book)
Then I tightened it as much as I could, that is until I got scared to strip something.
The bible does give a torque setting but impossible to fit a torque wrench in there.

3 months have passed with small rides, I washed it thoroughly for the first spring ride.
Still leaking a drop or two.  >:(

Have you fine people run into similar issues?
I would like to read your thoughts and opinions on the matter, maybe make this topic a compendium of OPS issues and fixes, who knows!

Cheers from across the channel! 8)

CB350/400 / Re: Re-threading carbs?!
« on: January 30, 2024, 09:31:15 AM »
Hey everyone, I am resuscitating this thread to give an update on the bike.

Carbs were fine, even more so with Al’s OEM jets.

The issue was the previous owner did an extremely poor job of cleaning the cylinders… It was more of a rebore at that point.
So much so that the pistons can wiggle somewhat… As a result there was almost no compression, cylinder 2 got 0,72bar for instance x).
It goes to show how well these old things were built as it still somehow managed to tick over.

Anyway, this was way beyond my skill and equipment level so I had a local shop (Rolling Moto Le Mans) do a full diagnosis and rebuild.
Sounds a bit overkill, but I already had spent a lot on repairs and figured it’d be best to just get everything done once.

Cost me a pretty penny (3k in total) But it is good as new now, with a kicker:
It was so overly bored out, it needed to be refitted with a big bore kit haha! So it is a 450 now and it purrs like a kitten!

I’ve been running it for a year now and apart from a bad oil pressure switch it’s been a good sport.

Yipeee!

CB350/400 / Re: Honda CB400 wiring connectors

They are japanese connectors, different from bullet connectors or fastons. In EU I usually find them on classic/ vintage automotive parts shops. Maybe you can find them in specialised electrical automotive shops?

Looking at the rectifier connector pic it seems things got heated. There is a possibility that there is a short. When investigating electrical, I recommend printing multiple copies of the wiring diagram of your bike (careful as there are different versions) and mark with a fluo pen the different systems on different copies: like 1 copy is the blinkers, another the coils, etc. Helps making a mental map.

I connected the two wires, and ..... everything worked!  ;DExcept one front indicator. :(

I decided to check the bulb and (this took a little while as I got distracted). The bulb was OK. I switched the two front bulbs anyway, and ... nothing worked!!  :-[

Well not quite nothing; when I indicated left, the right instrument panel light worked, and when I indicated right, the rear left indicator worked.

I spent ages checking everything, and then noticed that the voltage at one point was only 8,5V. The battery I was using is on old one with a bit of history, though it does seem to hold a charge when not stressed.

I'm not sure why a low voltage would cause the strange happenings, but I put it on charge and moved on to other things. I will ry again tomorrow.

Oh, I did find out that the wiring and feed to the coils is OK; with the kill switch on "Run" the coils got quite warm. Which may explain my flat battery!!

Ah well.

We’ll shit, your bike is cross eyed!
Just out of curiosity, what was the issue that led you to work on the wiring?

It does connect to the side reflectors but it also connects with the headlight mounting bracket. I guess this is where you're supposed to get your connection to the metal body of the bike. Crud can get in there and make it less conductive.
Best thing to do is to use a multimeter in continuity mode, attach the black probe to the negative terminal of the battery and then use the over probe ti check for continuity. Where it doesn't beep is where you have bad grounding.

I spent my apprenticeship in the merchant navy on steam turbines with acres of white asbestos and was 69 last sunday, does that make me a ghost?

Obviously! Just a very tangeable one.

I had that issue a few months back when I was redoing my wiring. The green wires on these nuts are there to improve the grounding of the mounting bracket.
With the plastic shell, the paint and the rubber mounts, it is not the most conductive area. Had me scratching my head for a while as whenever the headlight lens and metal ring touched the front mudguard the lights would improve by 50% if not more compared to when it was on the bucket.
Turns out it was just the ground that was shite in that area.

CB350/400 / Re: The elusive surge
« on: January 25, 2022, 10:10:08 AM »
Hey everyone, I figured a small update would be in order.

I took the carbs off this week end to go over it once again. Checked all the passages I’m aware of and rechecked the floats height. The mixture air screws were set to 2 turns out as the plugs were sooty and the manual calls for 2 turns as a base setting for the 400F. I then did a bench sync, this time making sure I followed bryanj’s instructions to the letter.

With the carbs back on I made a sudo air filter cover and spring (too impatient to wait for Alan’s care package to arrive hehe). With a BTR wrench I managed to push the air box boots properly onto the carbs.
As a result the bike fired up nicely!. Haven’t done the diagnosis and touch ups while running, just wanted to hear it run. Will investigate more this week end.

Cheers

Last year I had no end of problems with a 15HP outboard that wouldn’t idle consistently. I had the carb apart a couple of times, was CONVINCED it was clean as a whistle and moved on to dismantle the whole bloody engine as thinking internal seals (2 stroke). Not fixed. Bought a whole new ignition system. Not fixed. Tearing my hair out. Carb out a third time… and on this occasion I finally discovered a blocked gallery in the idle circuit … aargh. Totally embarrassed at the time and expense it cost me 🙁.
(the gallery split into two paths - unknown to me. Finally got it clear by successive syringes of isopropyl blasting through. Happy days 🙄)

I’m no mechanic… but surely an air leak on the atmospheric side of the carb would not give the significant problems you’re seeing? Ie is it not more likely within the carb or inlet manifold area?

Haha yep I know that feeling. It sucks harder than an airplane toilet.

Makes me wonder if there are any resources like schematics showing the innards of a carb.
