CB350/400 / CB400F Oil pressure switch slow leak
« on: April 11, 2024, 06:56:30 AM »
Hello ladies and gents!

A year ago I had a slow oil leak at the oil pressure switch thread.
When running at temp I would lose a drop or two every five to ten minutes.
A degreased the oil pump housing, switch and the threads before putting
yellow loctite (577) on said threads.
It worked for 300km and started leaking again.
So I got a new switch. Turns out the OG one has replacements currently manufactured
and fitted on modern japanese cars. So yeah no need to spend 60€ for a used one on
Ebay as I previously thought.
Fitted said new switch without loctite (Wasnt mentioned in the holy book)
Then I tightened it as much as I could, that is until I got scared to strip something.
The bible does give a torque setting but impossible to fit a torque wrench in there.

3 months have passed with small rides, I washed it thoroughly for the first spring ride.
Still leaking a drop or two.  >:(

Have you fine people run into similar issues?
I would like to read your thoughts and opinions on the matter, maybe make this topic a compendium of OPS issues and fixes, who knows!

Cheers from across the channel! 8)

CB350/400 / The elusive surge
« on: January 09, 2022, 07:24:43 PM »
Hey all, hope you're doing good!

I have made significant progress with my bike the last few weeks I'd like to especially thank Alankelly1 for his most precious help and Nurse Julie for the O-rings and the mounting advice that made the job of replacing the old ones so much easier!.

So: I have stripped the carbs, cleaned and blown every jet screws and passages possible. I have swapped the idle jets I had from an overhaul kit with nice keihin originals, thanks Alan!
The floats have been set to 21mm and checked for holes. The carbs have been bench synced. O rings were replaced and put in place with red rubber grease to avoid shearing. The slides snap back nicely. The mixture screws have been set to 1 1/2 turns out.
After installing the carbs back I have fiddled with the idle stop screw to get to 1200rpm when warm and off the choke. I then set the fast idle screw to 0.2mm clearance.
I get a respectably stable idle at 1200 rpm when warm. Startup isnt too rough.
The problem I have is jsut that the damn thing surges, it can be when operating the throttle or just when left alone for a while. In which case only fiddling with the idle stop screw will make it come down. I then have to fiddle again to bring it back to 1200rpm.
I have removed the throttle cables to make sure they were not messing with anything and indeed no change in behavior. |

Overall it seems like a lean condition problem. But when I turn the mixture screws by a 1/4 turn in to enrich the mix it stutters. My guess would turn to an air leak but doing the "squirt brake cleaner on suspect spots"method to no avail. I tried the inlet boots, fore and aft; the top of the carbs on the gaskets, the depression ports on the boots and the spark plugs just in case and nothing.

Do you guys have any leads or ideas what might cause this?

So close!

Take care

CB350/400 / Re-threading carbs?!
« on: December 27, 2021, 01:43:08 PM »
Hey everyone!
I'm in the preparation and research phase for my carb rebuild for my 400/4.

These carbs have given me all sorts of headaches since I got this bike but truthfully it was my lack of knowledge that was the main culprit.
In a previous attempt at revuilding them I changed all the jets and tubes etc... On one of the carbs the idle jet thread got brittle and some bits fell into the conduct. It also meant that I couldnt get the jet to sit properly. The threading got so loose in fact, I didnt feel any resistance when screwing in the jet and I crushed a few jets thst way.
I ended up taking the damn thing to a mechanic near Paris specialized in 400/4. She managed to patch it up, saying that it was just a fix not an actual repair and I should be weary with the idea of rejetting that carb.

Fast forward today where I indeed want to rejet with originals that are graciously donated by Alan Kelly (the real MVP ). Now I don't know what was done in there but for the sake of the argument I'll assume a crap ton of red loctite.
If I remove the jet it is propable I'll find my mangled thread.
My question is do you think I could repair it with a helicoil?
Or too much of a risk of cracking the jet tower?

Cheers!

Hi!

Name's Alex I'm a 28 y/o guy living in Le Mans France. I'm the happy owner of a capricious CB400F that has been more in the garage than on the road since I got it in 2018. Love it though!

I'm here to discuss anything motorcycle related, though for now it'll mainly be mechanical questions I think haha.

Glad to be part of this community!

Cheers everyone  ;)
