CB500/550 / Just stripped the threads on the steering stem head nut
« on: June 13, 2023, 08:09:09 PM »
Torque specs seems to be waaaay too much in the manual for this nut. Around 50 lbs ft. I stripped the threads of the steering stem :( Any advice? Or is a new stem the only way to go?

CB500/550 / Wire colors of reproduction left and right hand switches
« on: June 13, 2023, 04:36:28 PM »
Hey

I bought reproduction switches for both sides of my handlebar. The colors seems to be off though. I figured that maybe somebody knew what colors goes to what on these switches. My bike is a european CB550F2.

On the Start/Stop switch with light controls (first picture), I have these colors. The ones in bold is the ones I can't figure out where to go:
Y/Red, Bl/Red, Bl/W, Bl, Bl/Y, Bl/B, and Bl/Grey.

On the turn signal switch, I have these colors:
Light Green, Light Blue, Orange, White, Orange/W, Blue, Lighter Blue/W, Brown/White, Bl/Red, Dark Grey, Bl/grey

Does this make sense to any of you guys?

Regards
Alex

Hey all

Looking for the grab bar for this specific model. Can't seem to find used or reproduction models of this. Does anyone have one they are willing to part with?

CB500/550 / Front brake bolts torque spec

Hey all

Not sure what these are called in the manual, but the two large bolts clamping the front brake parts together - what are the torque specs for those?

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / CB550F2 1978 left switch
« on: March 09, 2023, 05:01:49 PM »
Hey all

I am trying to source a left switch for my handlebar. I can see there are lots of repros on eBay, also with the PA option in the horn button, as my current switch has. But on all of them, there have not been made a recess in the switch for the wires, when they come out of the switch. I guess this would make sense, if the wires has to run within the handlebar. But they don't on my model though, and as a result, I can't fit any of them on my bike.

Does anyone know a source for a proper left switch for a CB550F, or has anyone found some solution to this?

CB500/550 / The oil lock in my front forks won't come out?
« on: March 04, 2023, 02:47:07 PM »
Hey all

So disassembled the front forks to clean them up. But the oil lock is stuck in both lower pipes of my forks. Anyone has any tips to get them out? It's a CB550F2. I tried just letting them be, but I can't seem to line up the upper and lower tube when I insert the upper tube, and therefore can't get the little bolt in the end to catch the upper tube! Been at it for an hour now. Loosing my patience!

Hey all

Does anyone know a source within Europe for the Motolanna front fender for a CB550 front fender?

This is the one I am talking about: https://www.motolanna.com/ourshop/prod_5424308-Fender-Front-Shorty-Stainless-Honda-CB750-CB550-SOHC.html

CB500/550 / Copper washer at SS Brahe line attachment?
« on: February 06, 2023, 03:45:16 PM »
Hey all

I dissasembled my brake recently. When I came to the attachment point in the actual caliper, something seemed to crumble off the little screwed in attachment. I couldn’t figure out if it was some kind of washer or something, as it pretty much disintegrated. Can anyone tell me if there are supposed to be a washer between the caliper and brake lines?

CB500/550 / Measurements for the rear indicator brackets
« on: January 30, 2023, 06:33:18 PM »
Hey all

I bought a complete set of rear indicator light with stems and brackets for the CB550F line. I have the F2 from 1977 myself. But upon receiving them, they don’t seem to fit. I am not aware if the brackets themselves are the wrong type, or maybe I have the wrong passenger brace on my bike. I took some measurements, and was hoping that someone in here with a similar model would be so kind as to confirm if this is in fact the brackets for the 550F models?

CB500/550 / Question on front signal stems
« on: January 27, 2023, 05:39:20 AM »
Hey all

So, I'm riding a CB550F2 from 1977, and I am doing a little winter work on it. Right now, my front indicators are mounted in the fork covers bottom thread. I want to fit a simpler headlight brace, and then mount the front indicators directly on the sides of the headlight. Trigger recommended me this part in another thread: https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB500K0-FOUR-1971/part_351532/

The part is from David Silver though, and I would prefer to order from CMS because if import taxes etc. Can anyone see if that specific stem is from a specific model I can look up on CMS and then get it from there? My knowledge of all the different models and bikes are not good enough to find this myself…

Hey all

My fenders have rust holes. Looking to source new ones with good chrome and in good condition. Does anyone in here have something? In the EU preferably, as this whole exit thing rules out the UK for me. Unless anyone know of a way around import taxes etc. when shipping from UK to EU?

- Alex

EDIT: A sidenote to this - just found out that the aftermarket front mudguard from David Silver is way cheaper, almost half price, than the aftermarket mudguard from CMS. I wonder if I can get the DS version in the EU somewhere. Anybody knows anything about that?

Hey all

When restoring bikes, do you usually buy new bolts from CMS or DS, or do you source them from any where you can get them? Can't figure out the best way forward. DS or CMS would be the most expensive way forward. Don't know if all their bolts are stainless steel etc. Many of my bolts are rusted through, and replacements have been made during the life of the bike. Looking to replace them with fresher ones, also to shine up the look a bit.

What do you guys recommend?

CB500/550 / Front fork restoration during winter
« on: December 30, 2022, 09:18:47 AM »
Hey all

Was a little late to the driving game this year because of the engine restoration. I have spent the last few months driving around, but the bike is now parked again for the winter. I wanted to use this time to cosmetically restore the front of the bike, meaning front forks, brakes, tacho and speedometer etc. I have started research for this, but also wanted to hear if some of you guys had any tips or advice, things to be aware of when restoring the front of a CB550F2 or anything else? Anything is appreciated!

CB500/550 / Assorted tuning questions
« on: August 25, 2022, 10:20:14 AM »
Hey all

Going through the manuals, I noticed that pretty much all the versions I can find online has some of the section regarding maintenance missing, more specifically the vacuum sync section. Why is this?

Is the vacuum gauge supposed to be on a specific measurement (an image in the manual has the needle between 20 and 30), or is it enough that they are the same measurement across, regardless what that measurement is then?

I synced them recently, and although it is idling much better now, it settles at different idle speeds when I'm idling. I think this might have to do with my throttle adjustment. I am a little unsure on the "negative" throttle play - am I supposed to be able to crank the throttle clockwise and have the bike drop even more in idle rev? Right now I have around 2-3 mm. play clockwise. When I use that play, the bike falls in revs. My theory is that because of this, whenever I am idling, the throttle kinda lands at different places every time I let it go. As a result, sometimes I idle at 1200, other times I idle at 1100. Does this make sense?
