CB500/550 / Battery with 200 CCA?

Hey

Read on the US forum that it would be preferable with a battery with at least 200 CCA if using the electric starter. My current battery has 165 but is getting a little long in the tooth, so wanted to get a new one. I have not been able to find one in the right size though with 200 CCA. What do you guys run, and why?

CB500/550 / Spark plus with a hex smaller than 18mm?

This might seem like such a stupid thing. But I’ve bought and tried five different spark plug sockets now, and can’t get anyone to fit down plug 2 and 3. Is there a spark plug with a smaller hex size than 18mm that would work, or can someone link to a socket that can actually fit in there?

CB500/550 / Assorted leak trouble

Hey all

Just got Julie’s rebuild kit for my oil pump, and it aaalmost solved all my problems. It would seem after tonights ride that a little drop or two is still coming out. It’s pretty clear it’s coming from the oil pump cover. I handtightened those shiny new screws, as I couldn’t find torque specs anywhere. How tight does these need to be? And what can I do if that doesn’t remedy the problem?

Secondly, I have a weird leak, and I can’t find the source. It’s basically only on one or two fins in the right side of the engine. It’s in the middle of the fin, and nothing in the front or back. It’s pretty clear from the picture, and there is pretty much nothing else than what can be seen in the picture. I can’t figure out where this oil/fluid is coming from! Any experience with this?

These are nice. Not original I assume though. Does anyone know where they are from?

Also, is the front signal lights the same as the back ones? Mine does not look so similar at all!

CB500/550 / Ideas for attaching rear signal lights?

Hey all

I can't seem to source the original brackets and stems for mounting rear signals, so thinking about mounting some Motone bullet ones instead.

How have you guys gone about mounting third party rear signals? I would love to mount them the same place (the passenger grab bar), but am I supposed to mount it with some rubber in between, or what is the best way to go about it? Any experiences and advice is greatly appreciated.

And actually, same goes for the front, where I would like to mount same type signals as well.

CB500/550 / Shift shaft tiny lateral movement?

Trying to source a left side oil leak, either from the pump or the shift shaft seal. Both the pump and the shift shaft has gotten new seals in the rebuild, but when taking the first ride, it leaked rather a lot still.

Noticed a tiny bit of lateral movement in the shift shaft. Is that normal?

Is there a place I can source all five o-rings for the oil pump in Europe? I noticed that you can not get new screw nor the o-ring for the oil pump, and it’s not in the part list either?

CB500/550 / Finally took first ride on rebuilt engine

Hey all

Took a short ride on the rebuilt engine today. It started up instantly and runs and idles well on a bench sync. Oil is leaking from the oil pump (or shifter seal, although that is a new one) and I am hoping I just didn’t torque the pressure screw properly. It has completely new o-rings with the exception of the oil pump cover.

It got new primary chain, rubbers, bearings, piston rings, valves taken care of, new seals etc etc.

What is the best way to go about starting to ride a bike like this? Should I keep the RPM down for a certain time, should I not do long trips, when do I change the first oil etc?

Trying to source a front and rear fender for my 550F2. It doesn’t have to be original, but don’t wanna stray too much from the OEM look. I am doing a resto mod.

Any good ideas? Same goes for taillights for the rear fender.

CB500/550 / Fuse box woes

Hey all

Alright, trying to make sense of my fuse box. Before taking apart the bike, it ran with this setup to no apparent problems. My fuse box looks a little battered, but it should work.

Now, from what I know, my 550F2 from 1978 should have a fuse configuration from left to right of 5A for tail, 7A for head and 15A for main.

The labeling on my fuse box says they should all have 7A though? And to complete my confusion, it ran with a setup from left to right of 20A, 10A and 10A.

I just completed the wiring and turned the bike on today. No power. Checked the fuses. The 10A in the main holder is bad. The other two are still good.

Don’t know how it could run with a 10A in the main to begin with. But it’s blown now.

Can anybody make sense of this? Or is my idea of the correct setup mistaken?

CB500/550 / 650 camshaft mod questions

Hey all

Might be able to buy a 650 camshaft with gear in a much better condition than my own 550F. Quick questions for people who knows about this mod:

  • Is it possible to see a part number directly on the camshaft? I know there was a low powered version for the German market, and would like to dodge that one.
  • I read that I need the camshaft, camshaft gear, new chain and the tach drive. Can I connect the tach drive to my 550F tachometer, or do I need the 650 tachometer as well? And is this a direct replacement?
Anything else I should know about this mod? I run standard size bore, factory airbag and no modifications to the motor otherwise.

Hey

I am trying to source the two rear signal light brackets + rubbers (the brackets with the ground signal for the rear signals), highlighted on the attached image.

I heard someone just makes these themselves, but I don't have the tools for that. I have been unable to find them anywhere though - neither bracket nor rubbers. Can anyone help?

Hey

Got to the last chapter of my rebuild for now, which is the wiring. I thought I would try and contain all the questions in this thread and hope for all of your help once again.

It is still the original wiring loom, but with changes here and there. From what I can see from the diagrams, it is basically a question of matching the colors up and plug in all the wires. The switches go down to the little black box under the coils, and the gauges go to the head light together with the front signal lights.

I took a picture of the wires from the start/kill switch, as it seems that it has been rewired. The colors don't match up at all to me.

How can I go about testing what wire does what? Any tips and tricks?

Hey

Trying to torque down screws for the fork. I am a little confused as to how all the screws are named in the torque spec. Can you guys help me. Can anybody help identify the correct naming scheme according to the manual?
