CB750 / Electrics question (not Honda!)
« on: April 05, 2018, 08:39:58 AM »
Hi all, my wife has just become the proud owner of a Piaggio x8 125 automatic scooter so that she can join me on rides (slow ones!), she will also use it for work, because it’s auto it can’t be bump started and although the battery seems good and charges fine it concerns me that if it did ever go flat she’d be stuck!, I’ve got a good motorbatt battery that is surplus to requirements so I’m thinking of fitting it in the huge underseat compartment as a back up, initial thoughts are to connect it to the original battery with an isolator switch in the positive lead and charge it separately using my optimiser every few weeks, then if the original battery goes flat she can lift the seat, turn the isolator and off she goes.
Second thought is just to connect it to the original battery with no isolator so that the bikes charging system charges both batteries, as you can tell I’m useless with electrics so would the second option work, or would it strain the bikes charging system?, I’m preferring the first option as it leaves the second battery completely stand alone, I would appreciate your thoughts, thanks Mark.
PS if you’ve ever been on a scooter forum you’ll know why I’m not asking on one of those, what a bunch of numptys!

CB750 / Does anyone have a cheap set of carbs?
« on: December 28, 2017, 05:30:19 PM »
I’m looking for a cheap set of carbs so that I can refurbish them at my leisure and continue to run my bike on its current set until they are done, anyway if you’ve got an old set you want to get rid of please let me know, PS engine is a K6 currently fitted with PD’s, cheers Mark.

Tricks & Tips / Why your injection bike is jerky
« on: October 01, 2017, 10:05:07 AM »
Some fuel injection machines are a bit jerky on the throttle at low revs, including my scrambler, I actually quite like the sudden "jerk" of acceleration, and having to use precise throttle control etc to counter it, but if you don't, here's why your bike does it and how to fix it, I've copied in a response from Jens at Booster plug below.

The internet is a great source for information, but it can be bloody hard to separate true and false information - not everyone out there is an expert :-)

The BoosterPlug will cover all combinations of aftermarket filters and exhausts (With or without the cat installed) - as long as you keep the O2 (Lambda) sensor installed in the exhaust. (Which you should for several other reasons.)

Here is why this is possible:

Most aftermarket filters and exhausts will flow a lot more air at higher RPM, but at low RPM's the difference between the resistance in the original exhaust and the aftermarket system is minimal - so in low RPM conditions, the AFR (Air/Fuel Ratio) is almost the same.

In a modern fuel injected bike, there's no risk of damaging the engine by running it too lean when you install an aftermarket exhaust or K&N filter - because the O2 sensor in the exhaust will adjust the mixture back to the original AFR in all closed loop situations (Higher RPM)

(Constant medium and high RPM are closed loop operation, and the O2 sensor is in charge here. The BoosterPlug is active in open loop conditions which is idle, low RPM and during acceleration and engine braking. - See the BoosterPlug.com website for a full explanation on open loop and closed loop)

But as the aftermarket parts will flow slightly more air in low RPM conditions too, the drivability will be even worse than on the stock bike. Normally we see the open loop AFR go from around 14,4:1 to 14,5:1 with the aftermarket exhausts, and now you really need the small controlled fuel enrichment from the BoosterPlug to restore the smooth throttle action and to prevent the engine to stall easily.

Because the AFR difference (between the stock system and the aftermarket parts) is relatively small in open loop conditions, makes it possible for the BoosterPlug to cover all combinations of exhausts and filters on the bike. (The BoosterPlug is only active in open loop)

You are far worse off if you installed a Power Commander, where the O2 sensor is removed/bypassed and then changed the exhaust. Now you would have to dyno and set up the Power Commander correctly again to avoid running the engine too lean all the time - with the risk of damaging your engine.

So the fact that the BoosterPlug works in cooperation with the O2 sensor in the exhaust makes it possible for our device to cover all combinations of exhausts and filters.

Sorry if this got a bit technical.

Best Regards

Jens Lyck

Other Bikes / Back pressure reqd
« on: September 30, 2017, 08:07:19 AM »
[ Guests cannot view attachments ] I just fitted a scorpion can to my scrambler, you have a few options with baffling, it has a baffle that fits in the front of the silencer where it joins the exhaust pipe and one in the usual position at the rear of the can, with no baffles at all it's stupidly loud and the performance feels flat, with just the rear baffle it is acceptable noise wise but loses power up to 3k revs, with just the front baffle it's loud but loses power around 6k revs, bit of a flat spot, with both baffles it's as good as the OE set up but just a bit deeper in tone and slightly louder, spot on really, it's 2.6kg lighter than OE as well so that's a bonus, just thought I'd mention as reminder that when we're building specials back pressure counts! 👍

Other Bikes / Ducati 1299 Panigale test ride
« on: September 16, 2017, 02:39:44 PM »
Just test rode this, totally insane power, 207bhp, accelerates quicker than you can think, my scrambler felt like a moped on the way home, way way too fast for me, glad I experienced it though 😄😱 [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Other Bikes / It's not pink anymore!
« on: August 22, 2017, 02:21:13 PM »
It's not pink anymore!, a recent trip to a car boot sale resulted in the purchase of 3 tins of white gloss spray paint for £6, a couple of hours (if that 🤠) with a roll of masking tape and some old copies of MCN and all the pink bits are now blanco, so now we have this fine example of automotive art (read unbelievably ugly piece of 2 wheeled shit), but at least it's not a total embarrassment to ride now 😄.

P.S. I have missed a bit, can you spot it?

CB750 / Hopelessly unreliable these CB750's
« on: August 04, 2017, 07:25:16 PM »
Well after a mere 3.5k miles, she's finally missed a beat 👀, just rode 14 miles, stopped in Ashbourne market place and it stalled, pressed the starter, turning over merrily but not a hint of starting, tried several times, nowt, held the throttle wide open and she fired up, now ridden 10 miles and stopped for a drink, I'm leaving it 20 minutes or so to cool to see if we could be looking at something heat related, I'll check the choke isn't partially stuck on before I start her again as it just occurred to me that it could tie in with the full throttle start, anyway I'll probably have to stick to my uber reliable Italian bikes going forward 😄, fingers crossed for the next start!.

PS an old fella just said "what a lovely bike, is it a Norton?", how wrong can you get!😄

Other Bikes / She made it (the TT trip that is)
« on: June 12, 2017, 06:39:43 PM »
Well although I spent most of my time in the IOM worrying that the old girl might pack up on me she didn't, never missed a beat, got mobbed wherever I pulled up and a Japanese journalist called "Yuki" took a load of photo's and is putting it in her magazine, she impressed me with her bike knowledge and has covered 250k miles on her bikes since 1996, she was there covering the Mugen team and said that John McGuiness has vowed privately to return to racing when he's mended, great news, the only fly in the ointment was an idiot that dropped his bike on my leg and bike when getting off the ferry at Liverpool didn't even apologise , my bike looked undamaged but pulling up at sandbach services half way home I found that I was minus a number plate!, anyway due to Teresa Mays slashing of police numbers I made it home without being nicked! 😄, if you get chance to go to the TT take it from me you won't be disappointed 👍

Just found this old photo of the CBX1000 prototype, evidently taken in 1976, looks so much better than the model they eventually produced IMO.

CB750 / Is the battery to blame?
« on: January 21, 2017, 06:50:39 PM »
My winter hack, a 1991 CBR1000f died on me at the lights recently in neutral, the starter wouldn't spin the engine and the neutral light just dimmed when I pressed the starter button, the bike bumped started easily though so I got the 10 miles home OK, once home it would start on the button , since then I've charged the battery and it's seemed OK for a couple of weeks, a little sluggish on the starter at times, today it cut out at the lights again but started (just) on the button, once home I got the multimeter on it and it showed just over 12v, I started the bike and got 13.5v at 2500 rpm, I switched the lights on and it dropped to under 12v with the engine running!, (I always ride with headlights on btw), the battery was fitted by the previous owner and is relatively new but is a cheap lead acid one, before I splash out £55 on a decent motorbatt battery I thought I'd ask for a second opinion, do you think the battery is the culprit?, cheers Mark.

Other Bikes / Another new old one
« on: December 22, 2016, 06:28:39 PM »
Well after being driven mad by suppliers sending faulty parts or incorrect quantities of parts the winter hack is finally on the road!, one previous owner and off the road for the last 10 years she breathes again, bright pink and ugly but somehow I love it 😄, 130bhp but 600lb wet means its swift but not scary fast, very smooth and comfortable, I might even restore it a bit rather than just use it as a hack, anyway get your sunglasses on 😎 , here she is!.
PS handles well, check out the chicken strips on the photo 😄
